Featured Strand Restaurants
1. Chotto Matte
Japanese restaurant in Soho
11-13 Frith St - W1
“Love the spin on the Peruvian x Japanese dishes” – Kurt Zdesar’s Nikkei concept fueled by its ‘Tokyo to Lima’ cocktail menu is growing like topsy, expanding from its Soho home (undergoing ‘an exciting restyle’ as of summer 2022) to Marylebone Village in January 2022, with forthcoming debuts in Doha, Riyadh and San Francisco as part of a plan to expand to 20 sites globally in the next 5 years. The vibe is as energetic as its expansion plans: “too noisy for the seniors in our group, but all the youngsters loved it!”
2. Volta do Mar
Portuguese restaurant in Covent Garden
13-15 Tavistock Street - WC2E
An “always good”, culinarily interesting Covent Garden three-year-old, from Salt Yard founder Simon Mullins and his Portuguese wife Isabel Almeida Da Silva. Named after the ‘return from the sea’: it serves a menu not just from Portugal but from the territories it traded with or colonised, from Brazil in the west via parts of Africa to Goa, Macau and Nagasaki in the east.
3. San Carlo Cicchetti
Italian restaurant in Piccadilly
215 Piccadilly - W1
These “slick and professional” Italians (offshoots of the national San Carlo chain) are “buzzy and convenient sorts of places, where you can enjoy an upbeat bite without hanging around too long”. They serve “an extensive menu of small Venetian sharing plates”: “at best they’re excellent” and almost invariably a meal is “good fun”. The best known outlet is steps from Piccadilly Circus – “it might look like a tourist trap in its prime location but it’s a reliable and smartly decorated venue”.
4. San Carlo
Italian restaurant in St James
2 Regent Street Saint James's - SW1Y
This “sophisticated Italian restaurant” north of Pall Mall, from Sicilian-born Carlo Distefano’s national group, inspires relatively limited feedback despite (because of?) its heart-of-the-West-End location. It’s consistently well-rated, though – fans say it “can always be relied on for business and social meals”.
5. Zima Russian Restaurant
Russian restaurant in Soho
45 Frith Street - W1

6. Le Garrick
French restaurant in Covent Garden
10-12 Garrick Street - WC2
“The cramped basement is super-cute and atmospheric” (“its booths and candles making it one of the more romantic venues in town”) at this “little piece of Paris in the heart of Covent Garden”. With its “decent French provincial-style cooking” it is particularly tipped as a “very acceptable pre-theatre option”.
7. Chez Antoinette
French restaurant in Covent Garden
Unit 30 The Market Building - WC2
“Invitingly tucked away off Victoria Street”, “it feels like stepping into Paris” at this “good little bistro”, where “helpful staff” deliver “a short but interesting” all-day menu of “simple but delicious fare” at “good value prices” (“excellent saucisson, and good bavette steak, duck leg… a very good tarte Tatin and reasonably priced house wine!”). Only fleeting mentions for the branch cutely located in the tourist hell of Covent Garden on the lower ground level of the market itself, but all good.
8. San Carlo Cicchetti
Italian restaurant in Covent Garden
30 Wellington St - WC2
These “slick and professional” Italians (offshoots of the national San Carlo chain) are “buzzy and convenient sorts of places, where you can enjoy an upbeat bite without hanging around too long”. They serve “an extensive menu of small Venetian sharing plates”: “at best they’re excellent” and almost invariably a meal is “good fun”. The best known outlet is steps from Piccadilly Circus – “it might look like a tourist trap in its prime location but it’s a reliable and smartly decorated venue”.

10. Cinnamon Bazaar
Indian restaurant in
28 Maiden Lane - WC2E
The “gorgeous food, with amazing flavours and presentation” at this Covent Garden café matches the high standards Vivek Singh sets at his grander Cinnamon restaurants, some of the best-known Indian kitchens in London. It’s a useful destination pre-theatre.
11. Bunga Bunga

12. SOLA
American restaurant in Soho
64 Dean Street - W1D
“One of London’s finest gastronomic experiences” – Victor Garvey’s “slightly unorthodox” Californian in Soho (’SO’ho via ’LA’) had its late-2019 debut slightly stymied by Covid, but is nowadays “consistently serving some of the most interesting food in London, using exceptional produce”; and with “brilliant ideas and concepts in each dish”. Staff are “chatty” – “overly so” for one or two diners, but “passionate and knowledgeable” to others – while the setting is “lacking atmosphere” or cleanly designed according to your taste. Dishes inspiring comment have included “amazing extra-large langoustines”, “superb tuna and caviar” and a “delicious grapefruit dessert”.
13. Frog by Adam Handling
British, Modern restaurant in Covent Garden
35 Southampton Street - WC2E
“Outstanding showmanship” (“food theatre for the TikTok generation”) “but matched with exceptional cooking running behind the gimmicks” (“dry ice, melting bubbles etc thrill but don’t hide the perfect texture and a palate of savoury flavour combinations”) has carved an impressive reputation for Adam Handling’s acclaimed Covent Garden flagship. Despite its status as a foodie temple, staff are “so relaxed and fun” and the atmosphere generally is very “informal”, which fans feel “makes the experience even better”: “you can really focus on the food”. And with “the kitchen being open, it allows you to see Adam leading his very disciplined brigade”. On the downside, ratings dipped a little this year, with some diners questioning “startling prices”, or accusing the culinary pyrotechnics of allowing “a triumph of style over substance”. (“The technical excellence is unquestionable, but really too much showing off… serving waffles with caviar and honey ought to be a capital offence!”). Success came in other respects, though: it was finally – not before time – awarded a Michelin star.
14. The Petersham
Italian restaurant in Covent Garden
Floral Court, off Floral St - WC2E
The undoubtedly “beautiful central London location” of this Covent Garden spin-off from the famous Richmond plant nursery makes it – for some reporters – “worth paying for the pricey food” in its two restaurants, especially if you have romance in mind. Plenty of others disagree, complaining of “disappointing” food in an operation that is “not even a decent shadow of the home port”.
15. La Goccia
Italian restaurant in Covent Garden
Floral Court, off Floral Street - WC2E
The “gorgeous setting”, in Covent Garden’s newish Floral Court development and with an outside courtyard, is a highpoint at this venture from the family who own Richmond’s well-known Petersham Nurseries: “perfect for a date”. Although “expensive”, it was complimented more often this year for its “lovely”, simple Italian cuisine.
16. Kebab Queen
Turkish restaurant in Covent Garden
4 Mercer Walk - WC2
“Real wow factor” inspires fans of this not-very-secret counter, in the basement of Covent Garden’s Maison Bab, which aims ‘ to push kebabs as far as they can go’. “The service experience – with food served by the chef onto the actual surface of the special heated counter directly in front of you” (no plates, you scoop it up in your fingers) – “brings a brilliant sense of fun to the whole meal”. “But it’s not at the expense of serious culinary intent”: ex-Gavroche chef, Manu Canales creates “original food, with exceptional quality of ingredients and cooking”.
17. temper Covent Garden
Pizza restaurant in Covent Garden
5 Mercers Walk - WC2
“Sitting at the counter with all of its theatre is amazing” at Neil Rankin’s “noisy, buzzy and fun” outlets, whose “really cool (well, hot) feature are the ‘fire pit’ cooking stations”, from which they offer “a great mix of meat dishes” (including rare-breed steaks), plus fish options. There were some “off days” reported this year, though: in particular, service has sometimes been “under pressure” or even “shambolic”.
18. Lahpet
Burmese restaurant in Covent Garden
21 Slingsby Place - WC2E
“Distinctive and exciting” flavours of Burma (“an under-represented cuisine in London”) have now made their way from a stall near London Bridge, via a Hackney railway arch and a Shoreditch restaurant (still running) to the West End, in Covent Garden’s newish ‘The Yards’ development, thanks to founders Dan Anton and Burmese chef Zaw Mahesh. Named after a salad of pickled tea leaves, Lahpet is “lively and noisy”, and its food is “thrilling”. Top Tip – “the luminescent ginger salad… so zingy and flavourful!”
19. Maison Bab
Middle Eastern restaurant in Covent Garden
4 Mercer Walk - WC2H
“Intriguing twists on the kebab theme” (plus “good beer brewed on site” at the Kraft Dalston branch) continue to win consistently good ratings for this expanding chain, which in September 2022 adds a 20-seater in Brixton to its roster of locations. See also Kebab Queen.
20. Hawksmoor
Steaks & grills restaurant in Covent Garden
11 Langley St - WC2
“Bloody good, succulent steaks”, with “epic cocktails and wines”, all served in “rather clubby”, “classy” surroundings is a formula that’s won fame and fortune for Huw Gott and Will Beckett’s steakhouse phenomenon. “Many happy afternoons have been lost in these places!”, which continue to be voted as London’s “best steak chain by far”, and “a go-to for business”. “Everything is top-notch: the quality and cookery of the beef; the exemplary seafood (be it Salcombe crab on toast or their lobster); even down to their excellent sides of mac ’n’ cheese, bone marrow or Caesar salad”. However, a visit “is not exactly easy on the wallet”. “It’s verrrrry expensive” (and “if you go with mates who like to chug back the wine, the bill will be massive!”). And ratings are coming under ever-more pressure due to “staff who seem unable to cope”, or meals with “too many misses at too heavy a price to be a reliable bet”. Last year, the team expanded to Manhattan and also opened a “stunning floating boat/barge” in the docks at Canary Wharf. Later in 2022, the group will also add a Liverpool branch to rival Manchester’s; and a few months later make a Dublin debut on College Green too. “Are they losing some of their je-ne-sais-quoi as they get bigger and badder? There’s a sneaking suspicion the lustre is being slightly lost.”
