1. Kaspar's Seafood and Grill, The Savoy Hotel Fish & seafood restaurant in Strand The Strand - WC2R
“The river views are super if you’re lucky enough to get a table by the windows”, in The Savoy’s “plush, calm dining room, at the back of the hotel”, which many still recall as The Savoy River Restaurant. Most reports are of fish and seafood “to savour”, plus “expert service in beautiful surroundings”, although even fans can feel that “it’s quite a pricey treat”, and some sceptics say that, “while pleasant, standards are not as outstanding as you’d expect from The Savoy”. Perhaps its good ratings will improve even further with the July 2019 recruitment of Joost Bijster as head chef. Top Tip – head here for a “perfect breakfast”.
2. Gordon’s Wine Bar International restaurant in Strand 47 Villiers St - WC2
“An old favourite – but still the best place to meet friends in London” – this lovingly preserved, 1890s wine bar by Embankment station has a huge outside terrace and “atmospheric cellars” lit by candles. “This is not about the food (which is perfectly OK, just very limited) or the grumpy staff – it’s about the wine and the ambience, delivered here in spades”. “How wonderful to take someone who’s never been before, to experience the atmosphere”, either as a boozy hideaway in winter, or for a BBQ by the park in summer.
3. The Savoy Hotel, Savoy Grill British, Traditional restaurant in Strand Strand - WC2
“One of London’s iconic dining rooms”: this panelled chamber – just off the foyer of The Strand’s famous Art Deco landmark – still exudes “old-school elegance”, and, even if it’s not quite the pre-eminent power dining scene that it was in Thatcher’s day, it’s still popular with expense-accounters, who particularly appreciate its “comprehensive wine list”. Under the stewardship of the Gordon Ramsay group, its “classic (old-fashioned even) menu” is “pricey but fabulous” to fans, but a wider view is that it’s “moderately average and not cheap”: “nothing wrong but no sparkle”.
4. Simpson's in the Strand British, Traditional restaurant in Strand 100 Strand - WC2
“Quintessentially British cuisine in very generous portions” is the raison d’être of this historic, panelled dining room, which has its bicentenary in sight; and where “a recent revamp seems to have done some good – it’s still old-fashioned, but in a good way”. But when it comes to the quality of the cooking, it’s still not a safe bet – there are regulars who feel “its roast beef and Yorkshire pudding never disappoints”, but there remains a sizeable contingent, who rate the beef “below average” and the accompanying veg “school dinner standard” – “such a shame for a wonderful old establishment”. Top Tip – a Full English here is a good way to start the day.
