Featured Surrey Restaurants
1. Steven Edwards Bingham Riverhouse British, Modern restaurant in Richmond Upon Thames 61-63 Petersham Road - TW10
“A super-pretty location” helps make the dining room of this Richmond boutique hotel – rebranded this year as the Bingham Riverhouse – “unbeatable for a special meal”. To accompany the “lovely ambience”, and “great views over the Thames”, the food is an attraction in itself: “the menu reflects the seasons well and is always delivered to a high standard”.
2. The French Table French restaurant in Surbiton 85 Maple Rd - KT6
“Eric and Sarah Guignard continue to command a loyal following with their innovative modern French cuisine, relaxed and friendly hospitality and carefully chosen wine list” at this long-standing bright spark in the ’burbs: “a surprising find” (if a “cramped” one) for first timers, providing “amazing value in the heart of suburbia”. As one of Surrey’s better restaurants, it commands a much-more-than-local clientele: “we travel for at least one and a half hours by car/taxi then train to eat here; if we lived closer we would dine at TFT at least twice a month”. Top Top – “lunch is a steal that’s well worth braving Surbiton for”.
3. Mezzet Lebanese restaurant in East Molesey 43 Bridge Rd - KT8
“A lovely local restaurant” serving “fresh well-cooked Lebanese food at sensible prices”, and whose owner “always remembers your name”; spin-off Mezzet Dar, blending Spanish and Lebanese tapas, is nearby.
4. The Glasshouse British, Modern restaurant in Kew 14 Station Pde - TW9
“A five-star experience” – this posher-than-usual neighbourhood haunt, by Kew Gardens tube station is “the lowest profile in the Chez Bruce stable”. Arguably “the dining room itself is a little uninspiring, but it has a good atmosphere when it’s full”, and the operation generally shows “similar care and professionalism” to its siblings, down to the “expert cuisine”; “well chosen, affordable wine list”; and “top cheeseboard”. After a rocky patch, long term fans feel it’s “sprung back to form”, but scores have yet to hit their old highs here, and a more representative view is that “it’s not as superlative as it was, but of very high quality nevertheless”.
5. London House British, Modern restaurant in West Byfleet 30 Station Approach - KT14
2019 Review: With “superb food, excellent service and a great atmosphere”, MasterChef semi-finalist Ben Piette’s two-year-old spot is “a brilliant find” in West Byfleet; in early 2018 they “opened Camouflage next door for pre-or -post dinner drinks” (their ‘The Pantry’ deli on the other side makes for a real foodie sandwich).
6. Le Salon Privé French restaurant in Twickenham 43 Crown Rd - TW1
“Excellent French food prepared by an Italian chef” – Gianluca di Monaco, who trained under the great Pierre Koffmann – wins solid ratings for this “very pretty” St Margaret’s bistro. Its prix-fixe menu offers “excellent value and choices”, ensuring it is “always busy”. Top Tip – “good venue before the rugby at nearby Twickenham”.
7. Meejana Lebanese restaurant in Weybridge 49 Church St - KT13
2018 Review: Limited but positive feedback on this ten-year-old Lebanese (which also has a Kensington sibling), praising its high standards, including enjoyable mezze, lunchtime wraps and more substantial fare.
8. Mezzet Dar Lebanese restaurant in East Molesey 39 Bridge Rd - KT8
2019 Review: “An unusual blend of cuisines that really works” – this café a short walk across the bridge from Hampton Court mixes Spanish and Lebanese inspirations in its tapas dishes, and inspires positive (if limited) feedback.
9. M Bar & Grill Twickenham Steaks & grills restaurant in Twickenham Brewery Wharf, Brewery Lane - TW1
Martin Williams’s glossily-glam steakhouses have a touch of Vegas-glitz to their ritzy design, and particularly win nominations as impressive venues for business, boosted by the range of top-quality meat (the highest grades of USDA, Wagyu and Kobe beef) and an extensive wine selection. Since the top man returned to rescue Gaucho as CEO, however, some reporters feel “it’s lost its way since the wonderful early days”.
10. The Royal Oak British, Modern restaurant in Twickenham 13 Richmond Road - TW1
At Hippo Inns we want to ensure our pubs are one of a kind within the neighbourhood. Just a short stroll from Twickenham station and you’ll arrive at The Royal Oak. Spread over two floors, downstairs you’ll find a classic, relaxed pub complete with wood fire and sp...
