Featured Surrey Restaurants
British, Modern restaurant in Dorking
77 South Street - RH4
“The move from Ripley has worked” and Steve Drake is producing “phenomenal” cooking in his new 40-cover yearling – “an outstanding venture that maintains and even exceeds his former high standards”. “Stunning, innovative dishes are meticulously prepared” and “he conjures up amazing flavours” (e.g. “beetroot, Douglas fir, sesame and goats’ cheese packed a refreshing punch; tartare of venison with smoked egg yolk and orange purée was a rich smoky creamy mouth adventure; pre-dessert of carrot tobacco with coconut ice cream and lime gel was one of my top ten desserts; but just wait for the blackberry Waldorf!”). “Service is top-notch and the environment warm and friendly”. Top Tip: “a very good value set lunch menu”. Also “parking is tricky, so allow some time if you cannot get into the small adjacent car park”.
. The Latymer, Pennyhill Park Hotel
British, Modern restaurant in Bagshot
London Road - GU19
“The main restaurant really has the wow factor” at this ultra-plush country house hotel, where an architectural highlight is the superb, lavishly decorated dining room. Matt Worswick’s “excellent” cuisine throws up “some really innovative dishes” which his most ardent fans feel “will earn him a second star some time soon”. Even if that’s too strong for other reporters, all comments on the cooking are upbeat, and there’s consistent praise too for the interesting wine pairings that “really bring out the flavours of the food”. Top Tip: “superb afternoon tea, with a glass of Champagne and constantly refreshed sandwiches and cakes”.
. Al Boccon di’vino
Italian restaurant in Richmond
14 Red Lion Street - TW9
“You never know what you’re going to eat” at this no-choice Italian feast in Richmond, which has built a loyal following over the last decade. “More than a restaurant, it feels like a holiday in Italy, where you’re eating at Nonna’s home”. Chef Riccardo Grigolo and his team “are so welcoming” and deliver a lengthy Venetian-style meal – “fantastic food that just keeps on coming” and where “every course is delicious”.
. The Bingham
British, Modern restaurant in Richmond Upon Thames
61-63 Petersham Road - TW10
“A breathtaking panorama overlooking the Thames” helps makes the restaurant of this small boutique hotel “an exceptional choice in Richmond”. The cuisine is very “reliable” too, using “fine ingredients”, but there’s a recurring complaint: “the portions are very small” (“the dining room was full of ladies-who-lunch, and judging by their figures they don’t eat that much!”). Top Tip: “the market menu is good value”.
Fusion restaurant in Chobham
125 Windsor Road - GU24
“A charming location with amazing food” is the overwhelming verdict on Fernando & Kristy Stovell’s attractive timbered farmhouse, just outside Chobham – although its ratings slipped just a tad this year due to a few middling reports, feedback in the survey is fundamentally very strong and supports its high accolades (puzzlingly nothing from the Michelin Man, but a rare four rosettes from the AA). Alongside the à la carte, and set lunch options, there’s the option of a ‘Taste of Mexico’ tasting menu (reflecting Fernando’s homeland).
. Indian Zest
Indian restaurant in Sunbury on Thames
21 Thames Street - TW16
“The best Indian in the area… no… one of the best full stop!”, say fan of Manoj Vasaikar’s well-established colonial-style villa (sibling to his Indian Zing near Hammersmith), on the south west outer-fringes of the capital.
