“Better-than-average Chinese” cuisine (“not cheap though”) and a “lovely atmosphere” ensure that this upscale Oriental remains “a local favourite”. The original branch of the now eight-strong (otherwise London-based) chain opened on the King’s Road in 1979, with this Esher spin-off opening just a little later – and, while the menu hasn’t changed much since that era, absolutely no one seems to mind.

The “only upmarket Chinese in the area” – and part of an eight-strong, otherwise London-based, chain; admittedly the “menu hasn’t changed in decades” (this location opened in 1980) and they don’t tend to treat diners to specials, but reporters “love it” all the same – and “the outstanding team match the quality of the food”.

This “very popular” and “upmarket Chinese” is “several clicks above your average” and “well worth the extra cost”, with numerous regulars noting they have “never had a bad dish”. A fixture “in the heart of Esher” for four decades now, one issue does inspires gripes – “the menu is unchanged for years”. Top Menu Tip – “superb sea bass”.

“Better-than-average Chinese food” ensures that this early (est. 1980) offshoot of the stalwart London mini-chain is a “very popular” choice for “a really good meal with proper authenticity (i.e. without the artificiality which ruins so many Chinese restaurants)”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
