The “small, intimate dining room” at this luxury resort hotel has long been a top gastronomic destination, and currently has “the wow factor” under chef Steve Smith, who made his name at Bohemia in Jersey and is “at the top of his game”. His “interesting and enjoyable 6-course tasting menu” is a “real pleasure”, and comes with “stunning wine pairings”, while “staff are able to swap out foods without any fuss”.

“We love this place and the new chef, Steve Smith (who earned a big rep at Jersey’s Bohemia)”, say fans of the “cosy, historic and colourful dining room” (which can seem “a little dark”) at this plush Surrey resort hotel (a training base for the England rugby squad): “he has clearly brought his simplicity and love of simple fish cookery with him”. On all accounts, a meal here is “expensive but worth it”.

“Everything is hushed and cushioned, dark and cocooning” in the luxurious and much-accoladed dining room of this well-known country house hotel. Matt Worswick offers both five-course (£69) and seven-course (£95) tasting menu options which are rated good or better in all reports. The experience is “VERY expensive” and there is a sceptical view that “while the food is pretty good, it’s the place that is just lovely”.

"Imaginative food presented with real style. In particular both the desserts, the rhubarb and truffle chocolate, were unusual, delicious and a great ending to the meal. "
