French Restaurants in Surrey
1. The French Table French restaurant in Surbiton 85 Maple Rd - KT6
“Eric and Sarah Guignard continue to command a loyal following with their innovative modern French cuisine, relaxed and friendly hospitality and carefully chosen wine list” at this long-standing bright spark in the ’burbs: “a surprising find” (if a “cramped” one) for first timers, providing “amazing value in the heart of suburbia”. As one of Surrey’s better restaurants, it commands a much-more-than-local clientele: “we travel for at least one and a half hours by car/taxi then train to eat here; if we lived closer we would dine at TFT at least twice a month”. Top Top – “lunch is a steal that’s well worth braving Surbiton for”.
2. Le Salon Privé French restaurant in Twickenham 43 Crown Rd - TW1
“Excellent French food prepared by an Italian chef” – Gianluca di Monaco, who trained under the great Pierre Koffmann – wins solid ratings for this “very pretty” St Margaret’s bistro. Its prix-fixe menu offers “excellent value and choices”, ensuring it is “always busy”. Top Tip – “good venue before the rugby at nearby Twickenham”.
3. The Swan Inn British, Modern restaurant in Claygate 2 Hare Lane - KT10
“Esher needed a really good restaurant and this is it!” – star Spanish chef José Pizarro took over this “very smart pub” near Esher Common in March 2019, purchasing it from Bibendum’s Claude Bosi, and replaced its menu of pub classics with “wonderful, new Spanish tapas fare”, plus some Hispanified British dishes. For parties of 8 or more, you can order a ‘feast’ of suckling pig or turbot.
4. The Cricketers French restaurant in Cobham Downside Common - KT11
This big, “wonderfully positioned” inn, on Downside Common offers “a great formula which feels truly local, despite being part of a growing chain” (Raymond Blanc’s White Brasserie Co.). Service is “friendly and efficient” and provides “a great combination of high-quality traditional pub food” and some “good-value brasserie-style items”.
5. Petit Ma Cuisine French restaurant in Kew 8 Station Approach - TW9
This “simple, cosy French bistro” from Central Casting – gingham tablecloths, Impressionist posters, menu of Gallic classics – is a “reliable” hit with both Kew locals and visitors to the nearby botanical gardens. Top Tip – “great value set lunch” (“busy when we went on a Monday lunchtime!”)
6. Chez Lindsay French restaurant in Richmond 11 Hill Rise - TW10
“One of the mainstays of Richmond over many years” – this “lovely little bistro” near the bridge provides “a touch of Brittany with its galettes (savoury and sweet) and cidre bouche (though they also do offer a wider menu as well”); added marks for the “river view (if you ask for it)”.
7. Chez Vous French restaurant in Warlingham 432 Limpsfield Rd - CR6
A French-accented wine bar and restaurant-with-rooms (est. 2011) whose very dependable cooking has won it a strong local fan club over the years.
8. The Onslow Arms French restaurant in West Clandon The St - GU4
2018 Review: “Above average pub grub” from a “very varied menu” makes it worth considering this “very popular” village boozer; “well done-up” garden come summer, too.
9. March Hare Mediterranean restaurant in Guildford 2-4 South Hill - GU1
2018 Review: Launched in 2015, this “renovated inn” (“sort of pubby and restaurant-y at the same time”) is part of Raymond Blanc’s White Pub Company chain – a “really pleasant” spot, combining stylish decor, Guildford Castle views and a “strong French-themed menu that’s well presented and delivered”.
