Given its attractive setting on Downside Common, this “lovely country pub” (part of Raymond Blanc’s White Brasserie chain) in the heart of plush stockbroker belt would likely be a local destination come what may. But it also goes the extra mile and – though it’s not particularly ‘gastro’ – wins consistently high acclaim for its “cheerful welcoming staff” and high quality of cooking. “It was done up over the winter; and although there is no longer a set menu, the prices are reasonable in the current climate”. Top Menu Tip – “well-prepared steak and very good tartiflette starter”.

“A favourite because it’s so consistently good”, this spacious old pub in a beautiful setting on Downside Common is part of Raymond Blanc’s White Brasserie chain, and has a menu that runs from baguette with dips to (royal butcher) Aubrey Allen steak and chips. A recent makeover has spruced things up a bit.

Part of Raymond Blanc’s White Brasserie chain, this atmospheric and rambling tavern on Downside Common achieves “a high standard, embracing good real ale and generally good food” – with a menu that runs the gamut from tartiflette and escargots to beef & ale pie. There’s “plenty of space”, and a “nice ambience in the period building, or eating outside on the green”.

Service is “friendly and efficient” and provides “a great combination of high-quality traditional pub food” and some “good-value brasserie-style items”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Had lunch with a friend after a visit to Wisley. Took advantage of their January special offer of half price main courses. Enjoyed the moules starter and the pork ribeye. "
