Featured Belgravia Restaurants
1. Caraffini
Italian restaurant in Pimlico
61-63 Lower Sloane Street - SW1
“A stalwart that never fails to please” say the many silver-haired fans of this enduring “old-style Italian” just south of Sloane Square, founded in 1994 by Paolo Caraffini and Frank di Rienzo and run to this day by their sons and daughters. That the surroundings are “comfortable and calm”; and that service is “so friendly and caring”; and that a meal is “always such good fun” is what keeps it busy (it’s “an unreconstructed monument to the days when eating out was actually going for a meal out, rather than an act of prostration in a temple of vanity”). Regulars “know the menu by heart” – “plain, solid and reliable” fare “of a decent standard but not too fancy”. Top Menu Tips – “Don’t tell anyone, but it’s the only place I’ve found in London where you can get a good sgroppino (look it up), which is hard enough to find in Italy outside the Veneto”; “loved the plate-sized Escalope a la Milanese, and, since it was so big, so did my dogs...!”
2. Boisdale of Belgravia
Scottish restaurant in Belgravia
13-15 Eccleston Street - SW1
“Boisdale has the advantage of many nooks and crannies for discreet dates” and won particular support this year for its romantic potential: “a great place for those intimate moments: one can choose to enjoy the live music – or peace and privacy”. A traditional red-walled, Caledonian-themed space, run by wine merchant and Scottish laird Ranald Macdonald since 1989, its British menu features dry-aged Aberdeenshire steaks, Hebridean seafood, and haggis, all washed down with a wide range of wines and whiskies; and with a dedicated terrace for cigars. Blues and Jazz is the backbone of the entertainment programme, with Jools Holland, Patron of Music.
3. Il Pampero
Italian restaurant in Kensington and Chelsea
20 Chesham Place - SW1X
2022 Review: A short walk from Sloane Street, this elegantly panelled Belgravia dining room is part of a luxurious five-star hotel. Perhaps because it’s tucked away in such an expensive ’hood, it doesn’t generate a huge volume of survey feedback, but such as there is says it successfully sets a superior standard of Italian cuisine.
4. Sale e Pepe
Italian restaurant in Knightsbridge
9-15 Pavilion Road - SW1
Just off Sloane Street, this stalwart trattoria has been a feature since 1974, and its crowd of old-faithful diners are slowly warning to the new regime, who refurbished and relaunched it in 2023. Reports are still not as numerous as during its heyday, but after last year’s dip, its ratings are improved and feedback focuses on the traditional virtues that have made it such a keeper: “a solid Italian. We experienced one ‘off day’ before Christmas, but otherwise have found it consistently good”, particularly the “wonderful and friendly” service.
5. La Poule au Pot
French restaurant in Pimlico
231 Ebury St - SW1
“What could be better for romance?” than this “candle-lit”, “dark and mysterious” “hideaway” in Pimlico. With its “blend of clutter, old church chairs” and myriad nooks and crannies, it’s superbly “snug in the winter months” (or in summer, “ask for a table outside” on the terrace: “there’s no place better!”). “It’s like stepping back in time into another welcoming world, with delicious olde worlde French food” and “professional and friendly” service – if “brusque” in the classic Gallic style. When it comes to the “nostalgic” cuisine, it’s “good but not exceptional (it isn’t meant to be)”. When it comes to the dim lighting, “it can also help improve your date’s looks!”
6. Hans’ Bar & Grill
British, Modern restaurant in Chelsea
164 Pavilion Road - SW1X
Chic, “most enjoyable” all-day café-bar run in conjunction with nearby boutique hotel, 100 Cadogan Gardens, in a cute, quiet enclave off Sloane Street. You’re “warmly greeted by the staff”, who provide an assortment of menus from breakfast onwards of simple quality fare (steak, burgers, salad bowls, fish grills) “well prepared and presented”.
7. Muse by Tom Aikens
British, Modern restaurant in Belgravia
38 Groom Place - SW1X
“Always a delight to eat here” – Tom Aikens’s small townhouse restaurant in Belgravia continues to inspire nothing but very high ratings for its “delicate cooking and inventive flavour combinations” served over two small floors, either counter-style, or at the small number of tables in the “cosy if slightly cramped” space. “The counter experience is so close up and personal, and the storytelling approach to cooking so compelling, that it creates a beautifully intimate atmosphere”. The menu is heavily inspired by and presented through the lens of Tom’s upbringing: “will return to try a different season’s story”. The only negative review this year was from someone considering it overpriced, who still rated the food as “very good” (“OK, so I don’t like tasting menus: I still expect staff to converse instead of reciting the – very – long history of how such-and-such a dish was inspired and created”.)
8. Olivomare
Fish & seafood restaurant in Belgravia
10 Lower Belgrave Street - SW1
“The fish never disappoints” at this “true neighbourhood restaurant” from Mauro Sanna’s smart Sardinian group – although it is “a bit on the expensive side”, as might be expected from the Belgravia location. Top Tip – “book a table on the small elevated section at the back, where the acoustics are better: the late Dame Maggie Smith always sat there”.
9. Chucs Belgravia
Italian restaurant in Belgravia
25 Eccleston Street - SW1W
“Upmarket Italian” – associated with a lifestyle brand originally specialising in yachtie apparel, these luxurious all-day cafés aim to recreate the retro glamour of 1950s Italy, complete with deep blue awnings, wood panelled walls and white-jacketed staff. At their best they are a “lovely dining experience”, but – especially given the aspirational pricing – they sometimes fall short of their aims with an offering that can seem “mass and carelessly produced”.
10. The Thomas Cubitt
British, Modern restaurant in Belgravia
44 Elizabeth St - SW1
This “fashionable” Belgravia gastropub serves “good-quality pub grub” in its downstairs bar and a more formal restaurant-style menu in its “stunning upstairs dining room”. The launchpad of the upmarket Cubitt House group, it takes its name from the early 19th-century master builder responsible for much of Belgravia and Pimlico – and great-great-great grandfather of Queen Camilla. Top Menu Tip – “the grilled chicken surprises and excels”.
11. Olivo
Italian restaurant in Belgravia
21 Eccleston Street - SW1W
A well-heeled Belgravia crowd enjoys this “classic Sardinian, which continues to provide an excellent balance of food, service and ambience” under the watchful eye of founder Mauro Sanna, who has managed to “innovate while maintaining high standards” for more than 35 years. (“On a recent visit to London, I had to discover if the magic is still there – and it is!”). Top Menu Tip – “spicy Sardinian octopus with toasted crostini”.
12. Oliveto
Pizza restaurant in Belgravia
61 Elizabeth Street - SW1
“Consistently good Sardinian food”, a smart line-up of pizza and “Sardinian and other non-mainstream Italian wines that are always a treat” are in store at Mauro Sanna’s Belgravia spot, whose monochrome modernist interior design is undoubtedly stylish but makes for an ambience some find “perhaps a little sterile”.
13. Morena
South American restaurant in Pimlico
10-11 Eccleston Yards - SW1W
2022 Review: Caffeine aficionados should truffle out this all-day dining spot and coffee house from sisters Juliana and Valentina Beleno, who import green beans from their native Colombia and roast ’em themselves. It’s a pleasant spot, too – for a snack or brunch on the likes of poke bowls and Latino-inspired salads – located in the attractive Eccleston Yards development.
14. Ganymede
British, Modern restaurant in Belgravia
139 Ebury Street - SW1W
Contemporary gastropub from the Lunar Pub Company (on the former site of the Ebury Wine Bar, long RIP) which has built a select but enthusiastic following, who hail it as “Belgravia’s jewel”. The kitchen aims to put a ‘twist’ on classic dishes, with a degree of success (according to one fan, “quite literally the best place for a pithivier in London”).
15. The Goring Hotel, Dining Room
British, Traditional restaurant in Belgravia
15 Beeston Pl - SW1
“What a special place The Dining Room at the Goring is” – “You can take your boss, your granny and your lawyer… all at the same time and it will be to everyone’s taste!”. Amongst London’s most blue-blooded of hotels, this proudly traditional venue between Buckingham Palace and Victoria is the only one that’s still family-owned. (Opened in 1910 by Otto Goring, it is nowadays run since 2005 by Jeremy Goring). Its comfortable period style and well-judged service help make it “a real treat that takes you back to an age of class and perfection which you will share with your partner for a wonderful occasion”. It’s particularly “excellent for business meals because the tables are adequately apart for privacy, and the service is efficient and discreet”. Rather gratuitously, Michelin gave it a star in 2016, which might suggest it’s a foodie haven: in fact its “classic” Anglo-French fare is almost the antithesis: “some dishes have barely changed for years but that builds a kind of security. The approach is rather old-fashioned and a little rich but it is not the sort of place you go often… so enjoy!” Top Tip – “Since the delightful Catherine and family used this hotel in the lead-up to her marriage to Prince William in 2011, it has become a ‘go-to’ establishment for proper English teas. The great staff are all trained to look after overseas visitors who flock to their doors for one of the best afternoon teas in London. Delicious sandwiches, homemade scones with jam and clotted cream, cakes to die for and myriad teas ensures that every taste is catered for. This is a quintessential British experience”.
16. Wild by Tart
Organic restaurant in Belgravia
3-4 Eccleston Yard - SW1W
Set in a stylish and roomy post-industrial space – the former coal store of a converted Pimlico power station – this buzzy operation from caterers Jemima Jones and Lucy Carr-Ellison is “always a reliable place to go with girlfriends” to feast on Middle Eastern-influenced dishes, using ingredients from their family farms in Somerset and Northumberland. The space is big enough to host events seating up to 180 guests.
17. Pizza Pilgrims
Pizza restaurant in Victoria
32-34 Buckingham Palace Road - SW1W
“Sneakily good pizza” – double-fermented Neapolitan-style – ensure that many branches are “always packed” at the Elliot brothers’ still-expanding chain, whose new summer 2025 opening at the Truman Brewery on Brick Lane marked a return to the site of one of their earliest pop-ups in 2013. Nowadays, it’s one of the more commented-on multiples in our annual diners’ poll. Top Menu Tip – “pepperoni and honey!”
18. Il Convivio
Italian restaurant in Belgravia
143 Ebury St - SW1
2022 Review: “Fairly modern in style”, this Belgravia Italian of over 20 years’ standing has a “pleasant” ambience and typically provides a civilised safe haven within striking distance of Victoria. We have rated it on the basis of its consistent pre-pandemic performance and the assumption that it will reopen: as we go to press in September 2021, it remains ‘temporarily closed’.
19. The Jones Family Kitchen
British, Modern restaurant in Belgravia
7-8 Eccleston Yard - SW1W
“Part of the Eccleston Yards gentrification development round Victoria coach station” (which is itself “beginning to develop a bit of a buzz”) – this useful venue provides a “great location” (complete with “a lively terrace”) and serves a “slightly unusual menu (including good steaks)”. Ratings would be higher were it not for those who find it “a little pricey”.
20. Amaya
Indian restaurant in Belgravia
Halkin Arcade, 19 Motcomb St - SW1
“Consistently superb food over many years” is regularly reported at MW Eats group’s “very stylish and interesting” Indian, next to a small arcade in the heart of picture-book Belgravia. When it opened in 2004, it was way ahead of its time in the use of an open grill to provide small ‘tapas’ style dishes and “it’s still grilling and spicing in a super and innovative way”. If it was not in a quiet corner of a posh postcode, it would be much better known.
