Featured Merseyside Restaurants
1. Salt House Spanish restaurant in Liverpool 1 Hanover Street - L1
A stylish tapas joint just round the corner from John Lewis (should you be hungry after shopping for a washing machine) – “very busy, lively and fun, with interesting dishes that are reasonably priced”. Top Tip – “a very good value set lunch”.
2. Mamasan Pan-Asian restaurant in Liverpool Liverpool One, Wall Street - L1
Hospitality entrepreneur Brad Stevens opened this second branch (the original is in Glasgow) in Spring 2021.
3. Nama Japanese restaurant in Liverpool Units 38-40, The GPO Food Hall, 35 Whitechapel - L1
Opened in the Met Quarter's new GPO Food Hall in July 2021, an izakaya-inspired restaurant from chef Luke French and business director wife Stacey Sherwood, who already run JÖRO and Konjö in Sheffield (a sibling Konjö will join Nama in the GPO Food Hall soon); Nama means 'raw' in Japanese.
4. Sabich Middle Eastern restaurant in Liverpool Duke Street Market, Liverpool ONE, 5 Wall Street - L1
From the Maray restaurant group, a casual Middle Eastern joint that serves baguette sandwiches and rotisserie chicken; a sabich is a pitta filled with aubergine, eggs and tahini.
5. Panoramic 34 French restaurant in Liverpool Brook Street - L3
“The views are just to die for” at the West Tower’s 34th floor restaurant – a “great place to bring people”, particularly if you opt for the afternoon tea – but it’s no one-trick pony, and also pumps out some “gorgeous”, more serious cooking. Even the least enthusiastic report (which finds it “overpriced and way too pretentious”) says “it has the most amazing setting, and the food’s good”.
6. Bistrot Vérité French restaurant in Southport 7 Liverpool Road - PR8
“Cosy Birkdale bistro” – “low-ceilinged, but that’s French bistros for you” – “whose menu offers plenty of tempting choices”, whose food is “fabulous” and where the service is “professional and efficient”. “It’s always busy, so early booking is essential.”
7. Maray British, Modern restaurant in Liverpool 91 Bold Street - L1
“Fabulous Maray never disappoints” – whether you head to this “packed” and “buzzing” outpost (est. 2014), or the equally popular offshoots in Allerton and the Royal Albert Dock. Inspired by the kind of food found in the Marais in Paris, it serves “interesting and inspiring” Middle Eastern small plates (“with a focus on vegetarian dishes”), and the end result is “a great experience” according to its army of fans.
8. Roski British, Modern restaurant in Liverpool 16 Rodney Street - L1
This city-centre three-year-old from “incredibly talented chef” Anton Piotrowski, a BBC MasterChef: The Professionals winner, “is really getting it right now – great to see such a risky enterprise doing so well”. “What an unexpected delight – just another bistro from the outside, but inside it’s quickly clear it’s so much more”. “The tasting menu includes some very adventurous offerings” and on all accounts the food is “beautifully plated and tastes gorgeous”.
9. Lino’s Italian restaurant in Hoylake 122 Market Street - CH47
“Always reliable and enjoyable”, this veteran family-run Italian (est. 1983) has recently passed to the next generation, with Enrico Galantini taking over the reins from his parents, Lino & Barbara. It has always “deserved its mention” but such feedback as we have on the generational shift says the cooking has “improved considerably”.
10. Burnt Truffle British, Modern restaurant in Heswall 104-106 Telegraph Road - CH60
“A very reliable destination on the Wirral that usually delivers the goods” – Gary Usher’s cosy bistro was the first of his crowdfunded sequels to Chester’s Sticky Walnut and continues to inspire very high all-round satisfaction with its “consistently wonderful and reasonably priced” cooking, and service that’s “cheerful and makes you feel at home”.
