Harden's survey result
Summary
“Breathtaking 360° views of the Mersey, the city and the region beyond” are the USP of the 34th-floor restaurant atop Liverpool’s West Tower, where “floor-to-ceiling windows” make it “one of the best places to watch the sunset”. Cathy Frost, head honcho for 14 years, passed the baton in early 2025 to Paolo & Donato Cillo (the brothers behind Gran Caffe), who promised to maintain the venue’s legacy of modern European dining (reports praise the “very good starters and mains”) while adding their own Italian/Mediterranean vibe; they also expanded afternoon tea opening in response to demand.
Summary
“Unbelievable views from this dazzling 34th-floor restaurant” are undeniably the prime attraction at this dramatic (and romantic) eyrie in the city’s ‘West Tower’: the tallest building in the country outside London and Manchester. Over the years, though, the modern British cuisine here has been consistently well rated and although you can push the boat out on a tasting option if you want, the prix-fixe menu is competitively priced. Afternoon tea also gets the thumbs-up.
Summary
“Just watch the sunset over Liverpool from this 34th-floor restaurant”, say fans of this spectacular venue in the West Tower, the city’s tallest. Run by Cathy Frost, whose developer husband Hugh built the tower, the operation’s modern British cuisine has consistently impressed reporters, and new head chef Nathan Booth has settled in well following the departure of Elliot Hill to the Chester Grosvenor.
Summary
“Magnificent distant views of Snowdonia are the highlight of this establishment” on the 34th floor of the West Tower – although the “great modern food and service make for a lovely dining experience” that is “definitely one for romantics watching the city views at night”. Chef Elliot Hill left in June 2022 (after our annual diners’ poll concluded) to head up the kitchens of the Chester Grosvenor, but we’ve held the ratings as the food here historically has always been surprisingly good for a ‘room with a view’.
For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
