Gordon Ramsay is to open a self-named venue in a prominent site on London’s South Bank next Tuesday (1 September), having taken over the restaurant in Sea Containers luxury hotel.
It is his first new launch since the widely publicised opening of his 100th restaurant earlier this summer – but has attracted surprisingly little attention.
Sea Containers, previously known as the Mondrian, occupies the former HQ of the shipping company it is named after, in a modern building between Oxo Tower and Blackfriars Bridge.
Its restaurant, until now operated in-house, has attracted consistently poor ratings for its ‘unmemorable’ food in the Harden’s guide, despite offering wonderful views and a glamorous setting including a riverside terrace. But its cocktail bar, from superstar mixologist Ryan Chetiyawardana (Mr Lyan), has been widely acclaimed since opening in 2014 as Dandelyan; it was relaunched under its current name as Lyaness five years later.
Gordon Ramsay at Sea Containers will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner with a relatively tight menu of familiar Ramsay classics (beef Wellington, smashburger, ‘idiot sandwich flight’) along with grilled cuts of British beef and lamb, lobster, fruits de mer, sticky toffee pudding and lemon tart.
