Israel’s cauliflower king powers up in London

Israeli celeb chef Eyal Shani launches the first of his two new restaurants on the edge of the City next month, following the Miznon stuffed pita specialists he opened in Soho and Notting Hill last year.

Lilienblum, named after a street in Tel Aviv, opens on Friday 19 May in City Road, close to Old Street. It will serve sharing plates of food which the chef describes in a florid style, with dishes such as “seafood pan-roasted in tomato ovaries” and “a slice of cabbage cake that melts into itself“.

He said: “We’ve taken a highly seasonal, thoroughly market-driven approach with produce and ingredients heavily inspired by Israel, to the next level. I look forward to seeing the magic of Israeli cuisine arrive in London’s east.

Lilienblum will be followed this autumn by Seven North in the boutique Sircle Hotel when it opens in Devonshire Square, near Liverpool Street station. Eyal already has a Seven North in Vienna, which showcases his take on German and pan-Mediterranean cuisine.

The self-taught chef opened his first Miznon in 2011 and is credited with pioneering the whole roast cauliflower, now a global hit with dozens of chefs plying their own versions. Eyal now has more than 40 restaurants around the world, from his home base in Tel Aviv to New York and Melbourne – most notably the upmarket HaSalon, which he promises to bring to London in due course.
