“Delicious tapas” ensure a very loyal local crowd keeps returning to this lively little fixture near Tooting Broadway tube station – it’s “always loud and cheery. The food is mostly a hit and the occasional slight miss goes unnoticed in the good time had by all” – “I often take three generations there, and they all enjoy it”. Former food journalist Madeleine Lim linked up with local restaurateur Hikmat Antippa to launch it in 2015.

“Unchanged over the years but still a Spanish star in west London with plenty of charm and a style all of its own” – Abel Lusa opened this high-quality Hispanic venture in South Kensington in 1995 and has maintained it as “a consistent performer” ever since. “If you love well-prepared Spanish food and wines, you’ll find both here” alongside “excellent and friendly” service. “In June and July each year it’s filled with tennis players” and both Nadal and Alcarez are well known to be major fans (eating here regularly with their families and ordering take-out during Wimbledon). As a result, Abel has developed pop-ups serving his food at major tennis championships around the globe.

With its airy dining room and cute garden, this popular old boozer – a spacious Victorian tavern overlooking Acton Green Common – might look an unlikely-seeming destination for “a lovely tapas lunch”. The idea of a Spanish-inflected menu has worked well for years, though, supplemented by some larger, more typical pub dishes, including Sunday roasts. The quality of the cooking can be variable, with the occasional complaint (“terrible paella!”) interspersed in reports of “very good Spanish food”.

“Fabulous tapas” as usual wins praise for this “stalwart of South Kensington” from Abel Lusa – one of his high-octane trio grouped together around Cambio de Tercio (see also) on the Old Brompton Road. Now in its 24th year, one or two regulars opine that it’s firing on all cylinders again after a “down patch”, with “new ideas” and a return to “the high standards they had before”.

This quintet of tapas bars from the well-known Iberian food importer attracts most attention for its locations – in particular its “lively and popular” original bar at the entrance to Borough Market; and most recent addition: a “lovely riverside spot overlooking the Thames at Richmond”. Despite its renown – and some praise for its “small plates but big flavours” – ratings are held down by prices many reporters consider “high” for what’s widely seen as “pretty standard tapas fare”.

“Fantastic Spanish food” – including a wide range of “good-quality tapas” but also with an interesting variety of larger main dishes – has attracted a loyal local following for this Hispanic veteran in Pimlico over more than three decades – “great service adds to the fun”. Not far from Victoria, it’s a handily situated and affordable venue for larger groups.

This “bustling” spot, tucked away in a Mayfair side street near Piccadilly and Green Park, is a “perennial favourite” (“great for a gossipy catch-up!”) on account of its “fun, welcoming” atmosphere and prices that are notably kind for the area. Over its three decades it has attracted a long list of swashbuckling guests, ranging from Johnny Depp to Fred Sirieix.

This “great little bistro” in Mayfair no longer excites as it did at launch 10 years ago (when former prime minister David Cameron and his wife Sam Cam were regulars). Fans reckon it’s “still a top dining option in Shepherd Market” thanks to its menu of sophisticated “comfort food”; but increasingly it “doesn’t quite live up to expectations” (“all a bit crowded and the food was just about OK”).

This “great sharing-plates restaurant with very accommodating staff” – and a “good wine selection”, its primary focus – has been a linchpin in the emergence of Peckham’s going-out scene (“I’ve never had a bad meal here: in principle I’m not a fan of small plates but here it all works”).

“Top-notch” Basque cooking – “always of the highest quality” – again wins plaudits for this Seymour Village venture that celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. Whole turbot and large cuts of mature beef grilled over charcoal are the standouts on a very focused menu, while “the staff are amazing, friendly and flexible”. Sister venue Donostia (see also) nearby is a good bet for a lighter meal.

Twinned with Lurra across the road, this superior Marylebone bar/restaurant with an open kitchen serves “delicious” Basque-style tapas and pintxo dishes, including beef from both long-lived Rubia Gallega and Friesian cattle. The Spanish wine selection is carefully chosen with an emphasis on the Basque region – the whole idea for the venture came from their well-established wine import business.

“The best Spain has to offer in the UK” – Nieves Barragan’s “genius” dishes are “packed with so much flavour” at her and José Etura’s incredibly “buzzy and popular” destination, off Regent Street. “The tapas counter is one of London’s top places to eat (the only problem is getting a seat) to enjoy stunningly fresh fare, straight from the chef”. “Service is fantastic and the buzz in the room is palpable”: this is one of the vanishingly small number of restaurants ever to have been awarded a 5,5,5. Note: whereas the counter, bar, and revamped outdoor terrace are saved for walk-ins, you can book upstairs for El Asador dining room and also for parties up to 10 at the large ‘La Mesa’ table on the ground floor. Top Menu Tips – lots of dishes come highly recommended in reports: “the immaculate Suckling Pig always stands out”; “The Cuttlefish Pappardelle & Manchego Pesto is wonderful”; “Monkfish tempura is exceptional”; and the “Goat’s Cheese Ice Cream & Liquorice Sauce” also rates mention.

“Fancy? No. Value? Yes” – this bustling tapas bar directly opposite the Young Vic theatre offers “tasty, simple, quickly prepared dishes, delivered with energy and charm at a fair price”. Launched in 1987, well before London’s tapas boom, “it has survived for so long, it must be doing something right”. (“The real joy? Absolutely packed and not a single photo being taken!”).

Charcuterie, sharing plates and dishes from the Josper grill provide a “delicious Italian/ Spanish mix” at this “lovely and buzzy” small outfit: worth discovering in a backstreet just around the corner from St Mary’s Church, Marylebone.
