A tsunami of press hype around its launch set the bar high for this “cute and cosy” little venture set in the “interesting and lively locale” of Shepherd Market, and now in its third year of operation. Fans do still applaud its “consistently good” British dishes and “warm and welcoming” service, but it can also seem “a touch disappointing for such a legend!”, and cynics cite food “lacking oomph” as a sign that it’s now “probably past its peak”.
No-one disputes that this “gorgeous quirky restaurant” in cute Shepherd Market provides “lovely” British dishes and an “intimate” (“squashed”) setting. But having been the place about which Le Tout Londres raved non-stop a couple of years ago, even many fans now feel that “while it’s perfectly good, it’s not as exceptional as some reviews might lead you to believe”.
“Entirely deserving of all the hype” is the overwhelming verdict on this “small, but comfortable and cosy” yearling, by picturesque Shepherd Market. It’s “a real charmer”: service is “welcoming and fun”, and the “highly competent cooking” is “big on simplicity and flavour”.
If you can nab a table (ay, there’s the rub), you should find your efforts amply-rewarded by this “cramped” newcomer in Mayfair’s Shepherd’s Market – one of 2015’s hottest tickets thanks to its “genial” service, “romantic” style, and Tomos Parry’s “very different and impressive, yet un-fussy cooking”. Top Menu Tip – “the burnt onion butter alone is worth a trip”.
