“Whichever branch you choose, Noble Rot has the most wonderful wine list (even if one can only dream of ever drinking some of the vintages on offer!)” and the youngest member of Dan Keeling & Mark Andrew’s clan opened in 2023 – with the “usual unbelievable selection and enthusiastic staff” – on the former, convivial Shepherd Market site occupied by Boudin Blanc (long RIP). It’s a “charming and helpful” destination (“if perhaps a little closely packed”) with “super” cooking that’s an excellent foil to the famous wine list. “As for the wine, the list looks expensive (and it is) but look closely and the margins are frankly much lower than other places, so you do get exceptional wine for what you pay”. Pitfalls? There is a small minority of diners who find the overall experience “noisy and disappointing”, citing “bland” cooking. The whole vibe can also seem “too ‘Mayfair’, haha!” (“the fact that it’s full of loud hedge-fund managers means its siblings are a better bet!)”. Top Menu Tip – “the duck with blood orange to share is a triumph”.

“Retaining its legendary predecessor’s character” from when it was Boudin Blanc (RIP), Dan Keeling & Mark Andrew’s latest ‘Noble Rot’ (opened in April 2023) continues to slot well into quaint Shepherd Market (“such a very interesting part of London”): “the interior has a lot of charm and leans into an ‘old London’ vibe”, while still seeming “buzzy, relaxed and fun”. “Wine choices take precedence over food selections: the list is well-crafted and varied, and is also well-priced (and the highly knowledgeable team know the list, and help you navigate it with excellent suggestions)”. There’s “a very wide choice of interesting wines by the glass too”. A few diners are “disappointed, to be honest” by bistro cooking they say is “pretty unremarkable and not cheap”. Most diners, though, are more upbeat, praising its “quite traditional” fare as “unfussy, but superbly executed”.

“What a fabulous new bar and restaurant where Boudin Blanc (RIP) was” – this latest, April 2023 member of the well-known, wine-led group has been instantly hailed as a “wonderful addition” to picturesque Shepherd Market. “Thoroughly grown-up in style, it feels a bit more professional and slick than the lovely Holborn original”. In particular, the superior bistro cooking is “more interesting than in WC1”: “no culinary fireworks or cheffy tricks” but “worth it even for non-wine drinkers” and “reasonably priced considering the neighbourhood”. As you might hope, there’s an “exceptional” list of vintages “across a wide range of price points” with “random treasures at reasonable prices”, delivered by “charming and engaged staff” who “can actually have a conversation about a given bottle”. “Can’t recommend it more highly!”

For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
