The Sustainable Restaurant Association has announced its shortlist for the People’s Favourite category at the Food Made Good Awards 2016. Among the nominees is the staff canteen at one of the West Country’s best known dairies; a Hertfordshire park café with a 10-strong team of volunteers with learning difficulties; an organic, vegetarian tearoom in the Lake District; a Hertfordshire high street restaurant that’s had ethics at the heart of its menu since 2002; and a beachside restaurant with rooms in East Sussex that sources almost all of its food from within 10 miles.

These five eateries were among more than 600 nominations submitted by the public to the Sustainable Restaurant Association which runs the Food Made Good Awards. Diners were asked to put forward their favourite restaurant which not only serves delicious food, but also makes a major difference to their community and does all it can to reduce its impact on the environment.

The panel of judges which included Lisa Markwell, editor of the Independent on Sunday and Paul Lumley of the awards’ headline sponsor Nestlé Professional, whittled the nominations down to the shortlist of five, assessing them all against the three pillars of sustainability, sourcing, environment, society and good food.

Diners can vote for their favourite until Sunday 13 March by visiting www.foodmadegood.org/peoplesfave16 or tweeting using the hashtag #fave and the name of their chosen restaurant (see below).

The winner will be named in the Independent on Sunday on 20 March and will be presented with the award at the Food Made Good Awards, hosted by SRA president, Raymond Blanc OBE, at the Royal Horticultural Society’s Lindley Hall on Tuesday 22 March.
