You say steakhouse, we say chophouse (let’s call the whole thing off)

A new steakhouse, Block Soho, opens in St Anne’s Court, Soho next week on the site formerly occupied by another steakhouse, Zelman Meats, which closed here in March last year.

Block Soho is the second launch of the summer from Roger Payne’s Enhanced Hospitality group, following the opening last month of the Maddox Tavern in Mayfair. It pitches itself as a contemporary incarnation of the English ‘chophouse’, serving steaks from Huntsham Farm in Herefordshire, dry-aged in an in-house Himalayan salt chamber, along with fish and shellfish from Newlyn in Cornwall – all cooked over charcoal.

This marks its key difference from its predecessor; Zelman Meats still operates on the fifth floor of Harvey Nichols in Knightsbridge, and lists beef imported from the US, Canada, Poland, Brazil and Chile.

On the drinks front, however, Block Soho makes no attempt to limit itself to a post-Brexit, all-English policy. Its bar claims London’s biggest Bourbon selection, with 320 bottles to choose from.
