Featured Hertford Restaurants
1. Angler, South Place Hotel Fish & seafood restaurant in City 3 South Pl - EC2
Gary Foulkes’s “classy” cuisine – “always perfect” fish and seafood, from a menu showcasing sustainable British Isles produce – maintains this “City gem” as the culinary star of D&D London at present. Occupying the “cool and refined” top floor of a hotel near Broadgate, it’s “a great place for a business lunch, with excellent light”: “one wall is virtually all window, overlooking the neighbouring blocks” (and there’s a terrace for sunny days). “It’s pricey, but you are slap bang in the heart of the Square Mile.”
2. Neptune, Kimpton Fitzroy London Fish & seafood restaurant in Bloomsbury 8 Russell Square - WC1B
“Stylish, grand-hotel decor” creates an “impressive” backdrop to a meal in the year-old incarnation of this dining room within a huge Victorian pile (fka Hotel Russell) on Russell Square. Its brasserie-style cooking is decently rated but can seem “very pricey”.
3. Clarette French restaurant in Marylebone 44 Blandford St - W1U
These “refitted pub premises” are in their second year as a Marylebone wine bar, brought to us by a part of the family which owns world-famous claret, Château Margaux. Winning solid ratings for its “smart small-plates of French bistro cooking” and “great service” – it’s “all very nice, but too expensive” to attract much feedback… unless you’re tempted by a glass of 1999 vintage Margaux for £160.
4. Les 110 de Taillevent French restaurant in Marylebone 16 Cavendish Square - W1
“You will never get bored, although you might get drunk!” at this London scion of Paris’s famous Taillevent group, where “you can try 110 different types of superb wine by the glass”. Set in “an attractive former private banking hall” – on the opposite side of Cavendish Square from the back of Oxford Street’s John Lewis – its “staff are extremely well-drilled and make everything effortless and smooth”. However, “the total cost of a meal takes it out of brasserie territory”, while the “seasonal French cuisine”, though “enjoyable”, doesn’t always seem in keeping with the level of ambition that the final bill might imply.
5. The Tilbury British, Modern restaurant in Datchworth Watton Rd - SG3
Brothers James & Tom Bainbridge are behind this popular pitstop, on the village green, where the “food is above average for Hertfordshire gastropubs”, being split between relaxed pub classics and more adventurous British cuisine; the “ambience outside is particularly great”, and you can have “a lovely meal on a hot summer evening under the pergola”.
6. The Fox And Hounds Restaurant & Bar French restaurant in Hunsdon 2 High Street - SG12
“Top-quality food from chef/owner James Rix” has earned a stellar reputation for this village gastropub. The “daily changing menus of mainly English dishes, influenced by rural Italian and French cooking, always have a few delightful surprises” and “although it’s a long way from the sea, the freshness of the grilled seafood is a special feature”, as is “excellent” steak prepared on the Josper grill.
7. The Waggoners French restaurant in Welwyn Brickwall Close, Ayot Grn - AL6
“Friendly French owner” Laurent Brydniak oversees this “attractive” old boozer with separate dining room where the “menu changes regularly”. The set-up is fancier than one might expect for the genre, and the “very reasonable fixed-price menu at lunch” is a major draw.
8. Auberge du Lac British, Modern restaurant in Welwyn
The “beautiful setting” – right on the lake, within an old hunting lodge on Lord Palmerston’s former estate – makes this rural hideaway a natural choice for a “lovely Sunday lunch” or “wonderful afternoon tea”. Its glory days foodwise (under JC Novelli in the early noughties) are long gone, but those who go unburdened by great foodie expectations enjoy its modern French cuisine and say the overall experience is “superb”.
