This “lovely old gastropub with way above average cooking” “keeps up the standard year on year” – chef-patron James Wix and his wife Bianca have run it for almost 20 years. There’s a “lovely atmosphere and friendly staff”, and James’s “first-class cooking” has plenty of European influences.

Chef-patron James Rix’s “great, better-than-pub, cuisine deserves its accolades” at this village gastropub, whose dishes range from Italian- and French-influenced staples to Josper-singed seafood; “shopping in the deli is a tasty bonus” too (and one including treats from Spanish heroes Brindisa).

“Top-quality food from chef/owner James Rix” has earned a stellar reputation for this village gastropub. The “daily changing menus of mainly English dishes, influenced by rural Italian and French cooking, always have a few delightful surprises” and “although it’s a long way from the sea, the freshness of the grilled seafood is a special feature”, as is “excellent” steak prepared on the Josper grill.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Locals and visitors Interesting and exceptionally busy venue. They welcome dogs, one sat near my feet watching me a lot, but well behaved! Took a little time to order and get my first course, but after that service was well paced. Generally happy with service, any slight glitches were a reflection of how busy it as. Josper squid was delicious with nice leaves too. Well matched with perfect chorizo. Main was a very good quality roast beef, well presented nicely cooked, with very well cooked vegetables. Dessert was on a whole different level… Paris Brest, choux pastry, praline cream, hot chocolate sauce & toasted nuts of exceptional taste and quality, only niggle would like Choux slightly lighter! Lovely staff, clean characterful toilets. Well worth the hours drive, just past Harlow."
