This “consistent, unpretentious and very welcoming pub/restaurant” under French owner Laurent Brydniak provides “a charming, comfortable environment” in interconnecting dining rooms, and an “excellent menu that delivers the promised delights”. “The wine list and cheeses are superb” and the overall experience is “far nicer than most similar places”.

“Friendly French owner” Laurent Brydniak oversees this “attractive” old boozer with separate dining room where the “menu changes regularly”. The set-up is fancier than one might expect for the genre, and the “very reasonable fixed-price menu at lunch” is a major draw.

You’ll find a “very warm welcome from the French owner, Laurent Brydniak, and very good food” at this little-changed 400-year-old boozer. In fact, the Gallic cuisine is “much finer than you might expect from a pub meal” – and there’s a “superb cheese trolley” to boot.

For 31 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"We visited The waggoners last night for dinner, mainly on the recommendation by Hardens. We were wholly disappointed, there were no french dishes on the menu. The menu consisted of mainstream british cuisine, Steak, Fish and chips but they did have halibut as a main course which I ordered. The steak was very very average and not special at all, the fish and chips were not fresh they were bought and cooked from frozen. The Halibut was ok rather overcooked but the garnish it came with was dreadful, tasteless and soggy. I was very shocked to be honest. You can cook simple fresh home cooked foods, include some french and british dishes, why wasnt this case? Where was the classic french onion soup, escargots, moules frites, proper steak frites... amongst others. There is an extensive wine list, maybe rather pricey but no food to compliment the wine. I am sorry but this restaurant is simply awful and we wasted alot of money too, such a disappointment."
