One of a small Hertfordshire chain, run by hospitality veteran Andrei Lussmann and whose backers include famous restaurant investor, Luke Johnson. The worst trip this year was from a disappointed London-based reviewer, but it attracts a good number of local reports, all praising “good quality food (with a focus on sustainability) served with precision and at a reasonable price”.
“Always buzzy from the set lunch to late-night dinners”, Andrei Lussmann’s flagship has an enthusiastic local following for its “consistent” menu of MSC-labelled sustainable fish and “reasonable prices”. The former PizzaExpress executive has another four ‘casual dining’ venues under the same name in Hertfordshire, with investment from Luke Johnson.
“Reliable” is the word that crops up most often in reviews of this “high quality” venture, right by the cathedral: the original of a small Hertfordshire chain nowadays backed by Luke Johnson. To fans it’s “the ideal local”, and even those who say it’s “not especially remarkable” feel it’s “perfectly competent and worth a return visit”.
“A reliable St Albans stand-by” that’s “situated right by the cathedral in a lovely location” and is “a dependable fall-back for simple classics” (“steak-frites is a sure-fire winner”). Not only did it win the Sustainable Restaurant’s Association ‘People’s Favourite’ award in 2016, but also backing from private equity impresario, Luke Johnson, with the aim of pushing its further expansion (there are 4 other branches in nearby towns).
Lussmanns Restaurant Diner Reviews
"A mini chain but the food still have the appearance of being quite home made! Covid precautions among the best I have seen and the staff were thorough, firm but cheerful. Beetroot salad was Ok; Moussaka was huge and tasted home made. The Hunter's Linguine was about chain average. Apple Crumble was large and also home made in taste even thought presented as a pre-prepared dish."
