Harden's survey result
Summary
“Long established in St Albans”, and part of a five-strong, sustainability-oriented chain, this glass-roofed outfit by the cathedral continues to please with its “jolly good” bistro cooking (the latter recommended for its “consistent quality” and equally “good value”).
Summary
With its “tasty food” and “unusual setting” in a glass-roofed modern building next to the eleventh-century cathedral, this well-priced local bistro with an emphasis on sustainable cuisine makes “a good base for lunch or dinner”. It is part of Andrei Lussmann’s five-strong Hertfordshire-based group.
Summary
“A wonderfully welcoming and fantastic local bistro” – part of a small-but-expanding Hertfordshire chain (Berkhamsted is next) run by the seasoned Andrei Lussmann. “Food is ethically sourced and delicious” and comes at “surprisingly reasonable” prices too (not least the pre-theatre menu).
Summary
One of a small Hertfordshire chain, run by hospitality veteran Andrei Lussmann and whose backers include famous restaurant investor, Luke Johnson. The worst trip last year was from a disappointed London-based reviewer, but it attracts a good number of local reports, all praising “good quality food (with a focus on sustainability) served with precision and at a reasonable price”.
For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

Lussmanns Restaurant Diner Reviews
"This is the first time I’ve awarded 5,5,5 to a restaurant. Lussmanns in St Albans was exceptional in every respect. We were greeted in a beautiful, friendly, polite manner by a young woman who took us to our table. We were served by an equally friendly but professional young man. The dishes on offer always include some interesting and unusual items, beautifully presented and very tasty. The modern building is interesting and well decorated, and beautifully lit - each table is individually lit. "
"Cosy, comfortable restaurant. Attentive staff. Starter size of south coast mackerel was meagre & accompanying Asian slaw lacking in flavour. Main of halibut was excellent & cooked to perfection."
