Featured Didsbury Restaurants
1. Bundobust
Indian restaurant in Manchester
61 Piccadilly - M1
“Terrific vegetarian Indian street food” specialist that “wears its shabby-chic location with style” – it’s also “great value”, and the craft beer “isn’t too bad, either”. “Don’t be put off by the service rating as it’s largely self-service – which is part of its charm”. The hit formula has led to branches in Leeds and Liverpool, and most recently a cavernous brewery-restaurant across town in Oxford Street. It’s the “best casual dining space for a single diner” while also catering well for groups through its (almost) everything-on-the-menu-for-£100 deal, that should feed 6.
2. TNQ Restaurant & Bar
British, Modern restaurant in Manchester
108 High St - M4
“What neighbourhood bistros should all be about!” say fans of this long-established venue, named for its location in The Northern Quarter, which on nearly all accounts “always delivers great food at reasonable prices”.
3. WOOD Restaurant
British, Modern restaurant in Manchester
Jack Rosenthal Street - M15
“The food is quite stunning and the wines… wow!” – Simon Wood’s “impressive” three-year-old is a “special” venue for all who comment on it, some of whom had their best meal of the year here. “The tasting menu is exceptional” and “most times you go it changes, which is fantastic”. “You can also go upstairs afterwards to Homage where they do matching cheese and wine, which again has an extensive menu”.
4. Indique
Indian restaurant in Manchester
110-112 Burton Road - M20
A plush curry house in posh West Didsbury that’s both ‘Indian’ and ‘Unique’ (geddit?). It only attracted limited feedback this year but such as we have continues to declare it as outstanding all-round.
5. MUSU
Japanese restaurant in Manchester
64 Bridge Street - M3
Open from November 2022, this exciting-sounding arrival occupies the site that was previously Randall & Aubin (RIP), now transformed into a very ambitious Japanese restaurant, under chef-patron Michael Shaw. Musu translates as ‘infinite possibilities’ – here that’s translated as an à la carte, 7-course or 11-course kaiseki menu; or an omakase experience delivered at a special six-seater counter, looked after by head sushi chef, Andre Aquiar. Delicacies will include A5 grade wagyu beef and wild, certified bluefin tuna. At the weekends a more drinks-led operation is planned.
6. Chez Nous Bistro
British, Modern restaurant in Sale
179 Marsland Road - M33
Needing to eat in Manchester’s plush southern ’burbs? – this ‘suburban bistro with urban attitude’ (their words) doesn’t generate huge feedback in our survey, but such as there is rates it as excellent value.
7. San Carlo
Italian restaurant in Manchester
40 King Street West - M3
“An Italian classic where lots of local celebs go, especially the footballers” – this Italian stalwart (opened in 2004) is nowadays something of a local stalwart, and is one of the city’s better traditional eateries. “Never letting you down, it is generally packed to the brim with rather inebriated people and decked in fairy lights providing a great atmosphere and where the dress code is ‘dressy’. Food is always of high quality ingredients, many of which are flown in from Italy. There are authentic, typical Italian dishes including pasta, pizza and seafood. All the waiters and staff are Italian and the food comes rapidly. It’s a bit pricey, but you have to pay for quality!”
8. Tattu
Chinese restaurant in Manchester
3 Hardman Sq, Gartside St - M3
“A great-looking restaurant” – this glossy Chinese was the first outpost of a glam-looking national chain that hit central London this year occupying a striking building on Oxford Street. One or two reports suggest it can “fall short on food and service” but others acclaim it all-round.
9. The Lime Tree
British, Modern restaurant in Manchester
8 Lapwing Ln - M20
Patrick Hannity’s “charming old restaurant” in posh West Didsbury has hosted a steady stream of satisfied diners for 35 years, achieving “the highest standards” across the board. “Consistency with enthusiasm is still the hallmark of this much loved venue”; “the food is always good but unfussy – hence the loyal following over so many years”. Ahead of the curve on provenance, Patrick established his own 20-acre smallholding in Macclesfield Forest 15 years ago to provide vegetables, eggs and meat for the kitchen.
10. Greens
Vegetarian restaurant in Manchester
43 Lapwing Ln - M20
A Didsbury institution for its “creative vegan and vegetarian” cooking for more than 30 years, Simon Rimmer’s “excellent little restaurant” is surfing the wave of plant-based dining, and opened its first spin-off last year, in Stanley Square, Sale, last summer. “Dishes are divine and you’re always spoilt for choice on all courses”, with “lots of seasonal produce”. “Simon is often seen in his chef’s apron and is always happy to say hello – long may that continue!”.
11. Bar San Juan
Spanish restaurant in Manchester
56 Beech Rd - M21
2022 Review: “Gorgeous tapas dishes, wine and decor” – it’s “worth the struggle to get a table in this popular little place”, tucked away in a “quaint location in the hip suburb of Chorlton” and a hit for more than a decade.
12. Croma
Italian restaurant in Manchester
500 Wilbraham Rd - M21
“Always buzzing, with very helpful staff” – this “busy but reliable” pizza-stop in Chorlton is now – since the demise of its much-missed city-centre counterpart – the most commented-on branch of this small Mancunian pizza chain. It’s most often nominated for being “excellent with children”.
13. The Whitworth Cafe
British, Modern restaurant in Manchester
The Whitworth Art Gallery, University of Manchester, Oxford Rd - M15
2021 Review: “You would not realise you are in Moss Side” at the Whitworth’s “beautiful” and “family-friendly” glass-walled conservatory, overlooking Whitworth Park. Its location (above all) and victuals make it an “excellent place for lunch”, with the “three daily changing salads particularly recommended”.
14. Where The Light Gets In
British, Modern restaurant in Stockport
7 Rostron Row - SK1
“Rooftop views towards nearby Robinsons Brewery and dishes using plants grown on the local multi-story car park” both add to the epic street cred of Sam Buckley’s famous hipster hotspot, housed within the vibey brick-lined first floor of an old Victorian warehouse, with huge windows. Feedback is very good all-round including when it comes to the sustainably sourced small plates that have earnt it such renown, but this is one of the few UK venues where a massive media profile is not reflected by a huge volume of feedback in our annual national diners’ poll.
15. This Charming Naan
Indian restaurant in Manchester
78 Sackville Street - M1
2022 Review: A curry house like no other, with the all-vegan dishes named after Smiths' songs; superfan Max Paley founded it as a delivery service from a kitchen inside the Retro music venue (address listed; sit-in dining planned for post-lockdown). Dishes include Girlfriend In A Korma and How Saag Is Now?.
16. Refuge by Volta
International restaurant in Manchester
Oxford Street - M60
2022 Review: Justin Crawford & Luke Cowdrey (aka the ill-titled ‘Unabombers`‘, who also run Electrik and Volta) are behind this “rather glam space” in an old Victorian office block. Serving small plates – inspired by their “global DJing trips” – fans say it’s “a mighty fine place to dine”; others that it’s “just OK”.
17. Escape to Freight Island
International restaurant in Manchester
Baring Street - M1
This vast street-food and entertainment concept accommodating up 1,000 visitors in an old freight depot by Piccadilly station is simply “another world” – “a mind-blowing-sized venue and organisation” where “the food is not really the main attraction” – although there is plenty of sufficient quality to earn high ratings, from 15 different restaurants and bars in an “eclectic mix” that ranges from Voodoo Rays pizza, Brad Carter’s One Stop Döner Bar and asador grills from Baratxuri to tacos from Madre.
18. Albert’s Shed
British, Modern restaurant in Manchester
20 Castle St - M3
2019 Review: The eponymous Albert’s old tool shed (he’s the uncle of the owner) is now a stylish, contemporary haunt with a popular canalside terrace – hence why it’s “best in summer” – plus reasonably priced, mostly English grub. (Part of a three-strong local empire, which recently announced plans to add a Standish branch.)
19. Three Little Words
British, Modern restaurant in Manchester
Watson Street - M3
2022 Review: “An amazing bar and signature cocktails” are hailed in early reports on this two-year-old haunt in the characterful arches beneath Manchester Central station, from the people behind the successful Manchester Gin brand. Though its selection of small plates is not the main point, nor is it an afterthought.
20. James Martin
British, Modern restaurant in Manchester
2 Watson St - M3
2021 Review: The TV host’s “quirky” flagship restaurant wins high ratings despite its “interesting” (some would say iffy) location, upstairs at the Manchester235 casino. Head chef, Doug Crampton’s cooking here is “a real pleasure” – “all dishes are prepared with great care and are a delight to eat”. “Try the afternoon tea they recently introduced, very yummy!”.
