Slightly less Crazy Bear

Beaconsfield boutique hotel Crazy Bear has opened a new British-focused restaurant called Fable from chef Pete Gray, formerly of Heston Blumenthal’s Hind’s Head in Bray.

Fable takes the place of BEAR by Carlo Scotto, a radical 14-seater chef’s table concept that survived only five months from its launch last November. The new restaurant signals a dramatic reset of the hotel’s dining options in amore mainstream direction, with a press release saying it shows how “the famously flamboyant hotel is changing“.

General manager Shane Turner-Hill sways: “Fable demonstrates where Crazy Bear goes next, and having Pete in charge of the kitchen says a lot about our ambitions. Fable is all about great ingredients, great cooking, and a kitchen team bursting with creative talent and skill.

“The restaurant is a reflection of who we are too – down-to-earth and fun, with just the right amount of eccentricity and rebellion.”

Dishes include grilled octopus with chorizo jam, saffron aioli and sourdough, alongside roasted cod served with a mussel and cider velouté. The menu also includes a one-kilogram tomahawk steak for sharing, accompanied by peppercorn sauce, chips and baby watercress.

Other developments at the hotel this year include a new private dining room, The Cabin, with space for up to 20 guests for private dining, celebrations and corporate events, and a private karaoke room called The Studio. It also has a Thai restaurant, Hom Thai.
