Brutalist brasserie for South Bank

London’s National Theatre is to have a new seafood brasserie complete with a marble-topped oyster bar featuring a display fridge of smoked salmon and eel. Named after Denys Lasdun, the architect who designed the Brutalist-style South Bank arts complex, the Lasdun is scheduled to open in May.

The project is a co-production between the KERB, the street-food operators signed up to look after the National Theatre’s catering and bars 18 months ago, and the trio behind well-known Hackney gastropub The Marksman.

Jon Rotheram, Tom Harris and John Ogier (pictured on the NT balcony) say the Lasdun “aims to reinvent traditional notions of theatre dining” with “timeless brasserie-style dishes brought to life through a classic yet contemporary lens.”

In addition to seafood and baked whole fish, the menu will feature Marksman favourites including seasonal pies, savoury buns and a butter-and-honey tart. The Lasdun will open for dinner Monday to Saturday and for lunch to tie in with Wednesday and Saturday matinees.
