Indian Restaurants in Leatherhead
1. Potli
Indian restaurant in Hammersmith
319-321 King St - W6
“An interesting street-food menu is very well executed” at this “real treat” of a Hammersmith café, with a comfortable, atmospheric interior and “friendly service”. “It’s not as flash as Indian Zing across the road, but dishes are full of flavour and good value!”
2. Cilantro Putney
Indian restaurant in Wandsworth
244 Upper Richmond Road - SW15
‘Fresh, Tasty, Healthy’ is the mantra at this November 2022 newcomer on the site of Ma Goa (RIP), which aims for a “modern” variant of Indian cuisine. The first UK outpost of a family-owned group with restaurants in India itself – its “above average” standards make it a worthy successor to its long-established predecessor.
3. Pure Indian Cooking
Indian restaurant in Fulham
67 Fulham High Street - SW6
There’s “always something new and original to tempt you” at this understated and “very good value” contemporary Indian on Fulham High Street near Putney Bridge. Chef-owner Shilpa Dandekar (who trained with both India’s Taj Group and Raymond Blanc) “proves you can give a nod to tradition while being a little more modern, and not have to pay Mayfair prices to get it”. Husband Faheem Vanoo ensures the front of house “always provides courteous service”. Top Menu Tip – “the best black dhal”.
4. Rangrez
Indian restaurant in
32 Fulham Palace Road - W6
2023 Review: Limited but good all-round feedback on this family-run Punjabi stalwart, which has long been a feature of the restaurant strip just to the south of Hammersmith’s Eventim Apollo (and which sometimes only serves a restricted menu in the early evening during events there). It also has a branch in Ealing (not listed).
5. Fetcham Tandoori
Indian restaurant in Fetcham
248 Cobham Road - KT22
2022 Review: In a village near Leatherhead, this well-established Indian (opened in 1983) – nowadays run by the son of the founder – is strongly applauded by its local fans.
6. Saffron Summer
Indian restaurant in Chessington
4 Ace Parade - KT9
This haute Indian, in the Surrey ‘burbs (there’s also a Reigate sibling) was set up by ex-Oberoi/Cinnamon Club chef-patron Awanish Roy; it offers “a different Indian meal experience”, with the “lovely” food sampling Goan seafood specialities, or game from the Karnataka region, alongside more trad Punjabi dishes.
7. Dastaan
Indian restaurant in Ewell
447 Kingston Rd - KT19
“Well worth a detour by car, bus and/or train to eat in this small restaurant near Tolworth” – “looking just like your typical, noisy curry house on a dual carriageway… except that it is fully booked every night”. “From pani puri to chicken Chettinad, the flavours are exquisite” with “a lasting intensity that can leave you punchdrunk”. It’s not utterly ridiculous to hail it as “the very best Indian food in the UK at any price point, and yet it’s still very reasonably priced compared with the Indian palaces of Marylebone and Knightsbridge”. Top Menu Tip – “the lamb chops are an absolute must”.
8. Moksha
Indian restaurant in New Malden
216 Kingston Road - KT3
2021 Review: Out in the boonies of New Malden, first class ratings again – if on slightly limited feedback – for Arjun Singh Rawat and Rajeev Danga’s North Indian three-year-old.
9. Indian Zest
Indian restaurant in Sunbury on Thames
21 Thames Street - TW16
“Contemporary Indian cooking with flair and finesse” makes for an attractive dining option in the outer ’burbs at this colonial-style villa – a sister venue to Manor Vasaikar’s highly regarded Indian Zing, near Hammersmith. “The taste-stimulating amuse bouche to kick-off is definitely a harbinger of things to come” – (and “the loo decor must be seen...”).
10. Roz ana
Indian restaurant in Kingston upon Thames
4-8 Kingston Hill - KT2
Set in a parade of shops, Deepinder Sondhi’s subcontinental (with smarter dining room upstairs) is a fixture in these parts for its high-quality cooking, including some more adventurous dishes (think chocolate samosas, or chicken tikka with Laphroaig masala). If you wish, you can kick things off in style in the cocktail bar.
11. Swagat
Indian restaurant in Richmond
86 Hill Rise - TW10
2022 Review: “A real boon in Richmond”, run by exotically named founder Sudden Alberts, also behind Atithi in Twickenham. With its “delicious” Indian cuisine (“we particularly like the vegetarian side dishes”) and “prompt and perfect” service (“nothing is too much to make the customers happy”) it’s proclaimed something of a “hidden gem” by all who comment on it.
12. Mirch Masala
Pakistani restaurant in Tooting
213 Upper Tooting Rd - SW17
“Always delicious”, this well-known Pakistani canteen on Tooting’s ‘curry corridor’ offers the “same fun and good-value food as it has for years”. A favourite of local boy-made-mayor Sadiq Khan (so come on foot or by public transport), it has an offshoot in Coulsdon, on London’s southern fringe.
13. Munal Tandoori
Indian restaurant in
393 Upper Richmond Road, Putney - SW15
2023 Review: This “great-value local Indian” is a landmark on the South Circular near Putney which has built a sterling reputation over 32 years for its classic north Indian dishes supplemented by interesting Nepalese specialities such as momo steamed dumplings – all served in “huge portion sizes!”.
14. Indian Ocean
Indian restaurant in Wandsworth
214 Trinity Rd - SW17
This “fabulous, family-run” curry house near Wandsworth Common has built a loyal local following over the years for its “delicious food” and “always charming” welcome.
15. Kashmir
Indian restaurant in Putney
18-20 Lacy Road - SW15
“Very good food”, “charming service” and what they claim is the ‘only authentic Kashmiri cuisine in England’ are the distinguishing features of this Putney venture from Rohit & Shweta Razdan, whose culinary journey took them to New Delhi and Singapore before settling here eight years ago.
16. Indian Room
Indian restaurant in Balham
59 Bedford Hill - SW12
2023 Review: “Very helpful staff” add to the appeal of this Balham High Street Indian, of over 15 years’ standing. Whether it should be a perennial inclusion in TripAdvisor’s top 10 London restaurants is debatable, but the (limited) feedback we receive says it’s worth a visit.
17. Indian Moment
Indian restaurant in Battersea
44 Battersea Rise - SW11
2023 Review: This “smart, modern-style Indian” has established itself as a “really good-quality neighbourhood curry house” in its 20 years in Battersea. “Yes, it’s a little cramped and can be noisy at its busiest times, but the food is always good and the fact it’s BYOB helps keep the cost down” (£1.95 corkage fee).
18. Republic
Indian restaurant in Chiswick
301-303 Chiswick High Road - W4
“Luscious, carefully spiced and original food” wins high ratings for this “very good upmarket Indian” in deepest Chiswick. Founders Kuldeep Mattegunta and Mustaq Tappewale (ex- Kricket, Amaya, Benares among others) took over the venue from the brilliant, much lamented Hedone (RIP), whose open kitchen makes it a “great place for chef watching”.
19. Heritage
Indian restaurant in Dulwich
101 Rosendale Road - SE21
“Just amazing food bursting with flavour… and in generous portions” inspires very enthusiastic reports for Dayashakar Sharmar’s ambitious Dulwich Indian – “it’s so good for a local!” – and its small-but-dedicated fan club travel from across south east London.
20. Chit Chaat Chai
Indian restaurant in Clapham
10 Clapham Common South Side - SW4
2021 Review: “What a find!” – “superb and authentic Indian street food” developed at a market stall is now found in a permanent home by Wandsworth Town station. “Passionate owner Tania is always there to talk about the menu”.
