Chefs Brad Carter (left in picture) and Tom Brown are closing Island, their King’s Cross surf-and-turf restaurant, after just a year and moving it to a new address in Clerkenwell.
Their last service in the Chandelier Room above Mare Street Market will be this Sunday, 16 August, following which they will reopen next month at The George & Dragon pub in St John Street.
The George & Dragon operated as The Peasant until it closed three years ago, and was one of the first wave of gastropubs when it opened the 1990s. It is now reverting to its original Victorian name.
The two chefs combined their specialities for their fresh take on ‘surf’n’turf’, with a focus on prime British fish and meat – Brad as a nose-to-tail meat specialist who made his name with Carters of Moseley in Birmingham, Tom with his knowledge of day-boat fish and seafood from his time as Nathan Outlaw’s head chef before opening his Cornerstone in Hackney and Pearly Queen in Shoreditch.
The capacious George & Dragon is expected to offer standard pub food and drink in the downstairs bar, with Island occupying the first-floor dining room.
