2. Mezzet Dar
Lebanese restaurant in East Molesey
39 Bridge Rd - KT8
Tapas Inspired by Spain and Lebanon
What does Dar mean? It’s Lebanese for “lounge” and Spanish for the verb “to give”.
And that’s a perfect combination with Spanish and Lebanese-inspired tapas as well as fine wines in a relaxed and convivial ambience.

3. Three Horsehoes
British, Modern restaurant in Laleham
25 Shepperton St - TW18
This independently owned and run pub just off the Thames Path serves “first-class, chef-quality cooking at chain-pub prices, with a great menu for all occasions” – “you don’t find many pub-restaurants full on a Tuesday lunchtime, but this one is for good reason”. “They even make gravies from scratch for each Sunday roast and their own desserts!”
4. Indian Zest
Indian restaurant in Sunbury on Thames
21 Thames Street - TW16
“Amazing food, full of flavours” is on the menu at Bhanu Prataps “interesting” colonial-style establishment, a fixture for 17 years close to the Thames on the outer fringe of southwest London in a smart venue just back from the Thames.
5. Prince Of Wales
restaurant in Esher
48 West End Lane - KT10
“Newly reopened after an extensive refurbishment” (to the tune of £2m) in December 2023, this 140-year-old pub in a “lovely setting overlooking the West End green” now boasts a glamorous 48-seat orangery, outdoor bar, firepit and heated terrace amongst the gardens. The “interesting and varied” cuisine focuses on sharing-style plates (but not just), and there’s a “buzzy but not noisy atmosphere” that adds to the fun of a visit.
6. Good Earth
Pan-Asian restaurant in Esher
14 - 18 High Street - KT10
Reliably “fabulous” classic Chinese dining makes this offshoot of a London-based group (founded in Chelsea in 1979 and now with eight branches) a long-time “favourite for a special occasion” in the Surrey ’burbs – even if its appeal is “a little dated” for followers of fashion. Top Tip – “there’s a very good-value set lunch”.
7. Starling
restaurant in Esher
3 High Street - KT10
“A new and welcome addition to Esher High Street” – Nick Beardshaw – known for his associations with Tom Kerridge and appearances on Great British Menu – opened this “brilliant local gem” in August 2024 and its “highly accomplished” dishes from a small menu of steak, plus a handful of other mains are highly rated. Instant recognition by Michelin, though, may be a bit of a cursed distraction, as those going with high hopes on the back of such hype are most likely to feel let down (viz. “after seeing a fine review in the press and then hearing it had gained a Michelin star, I could not believe how bad it was…”; “many dishes were very good, but I was surprised it won a Michelin star”). It’s not a fancy place either and, when busy, “let down by its acoustics”. Top Menu Tip – “Truffle crumpet and the xoxo chocolate ice cream absolute highlights”.
8. The Tudor Pass, Great Fosters Hotel
British, Modern restaurant in Egham
Stroude Rd - TW20
With its tapestries, mullioned windows and Tudor fireplace – as part of a stately home that dates back hundreds of years and which has been a hotel since the 1930s – this intimate dining room (just seven tables) aims, and generally succeeds in providing “a real five star experience”. Foodwise this year, we have reports of "absolutely wonderful meals, truly unique in terms of food pairings, presentation and service” with no complaints, but our rating is an act of faith in continuity as Alex Payne left after our annual diners’ poll was completed in July 2025 (to Sorrel, see also) with Chef Stefano Di Giosia moving here from Kol. In the evening you can choose a four-course tasting menu for £125 per person or a ‘Signature’ selection for £155 per person. Weekday lunches provide a cheaper entry level option of four courses for £95 per person.
9. Mezzet
Lebanese restaurant in East Molesey
43 Bridge Rd - KT8
2024 Review: “The best Middle Eastern for miles” – a smart operation, handy for Hampton Court Palace, that offers “bold flavours a world away from many Lebanese places”; there is “lots on offer to explore – if anything perhaps too much”, and also a newer offshoot, Mezzet Dar, a couple of doors down, that turns out Spanish and Lebanese-inspired tapas.
10. José Pizarro at The Swan Inn Esher
British, Modern restaurant in Esher
2 Hare Lane - KT10
With its array of “silky-smooth croquetas” and other tapas favourites, backed up by “a great choice of sherries”, this popular gastropub-with-rooms in the Surrey ’burbs from Spanish maestro José Pizarro is “one of the best places to eat for miles around” – and, as you’d expect of this much-fêted ambassador of all things Iberian, “makes a decent stab at a Hispanic vibe”.
11. Coppa Club Cobham
British, Modern restaurant in Cobham
13-15 Between Streets - KT11
“Love the ambience… no pressure to quit the table and nice to overlook the river” – such are the plus points of these flexible, comfortable and welcoming homes-from-home in the Home Counties and in London near Tower Bridge and in Putney. Celebration? Both locations also feature funky little Thames-side ‘igloos’ seating up to 8. Looking for great food too? Don’t bother! “Disappointment” is often registered regarding the salads, pizza and other very middle of the road fare – keep your celebrations as liquid as possible…
12. The Six Restaurant & Bar Hampton Court
British, Traditional restaurant in Richmond upon Thames
2 Lion Gate - KT8
2023 Review: A couple of excellent reports suggest it’s worth considering this old pub reinvented as a hotel and restaurant (a couple of years ago), between the maze of Hampton Court Palace and Bushy Park. The refit is very attractive and the menu of superior gastropub fare is well-rated.
13. The Plough Inn
British, Modern restaurant in Cobham
Plough Lane - KT11
This steakhouse/gastropub cross is notable for its in-house butchery, with standout menu items including a 1kg tomahawk for two to share, or a steak platter comprising ribeye, fillet, bavette and smoked sirloin for four. There’s also a “lovely Sunday lunch combo”, and it’s “best in summer as there’s a delightful outside-eating area”. Top Tip – butchery cuts are half price on Mondays.
14. Cantina 41
Italian restaurant in Weybridge
41 Church Street - KT13
2022 Review: Having opened high street hit Osso Buco[s] in 2011, owner Elena Vahedi and her husband ventured into more trendy, casual eating territory in the same location with this equally popular Italian, born in 2018. “Top pizza” of the wood-fired variety (and wonderful pasta too) has earned it a real local following.
15. Le Petit Nantais
French restaurant in East Molesey
41 Bridge Road - KT8
This “lovely, small and very French restaurant” opposite Hampton Court Palace has been wowing guests for almost 30 years with its “well cooked food (nothing pretentious)” at “not greedy prices in the now very expensive restaurant world”. Chef-patron Jean-Philippe (JP) Gravier is joined by his daughter Victoria in the kitchen, with his English wife Kim running the FOH.
16. The Mute Swan
British, Modern restaurant in Molesey
3 Palace Gate, Hampton Court - KT8
This “buzzy pub/restaurant opposite Hampton Court Palace” is one of the more regally set Brunning & Price outposts, turning out well-priced and noshable gastroboozer grub; “the pub is downstairs, the restaurant above it via a spiral staircase with views of the palace and Thames”. Reporters have nothing but praise for the venue (“love the vibe, love the food, love going there for Sunday lunch”) and “it’s dog-friendly too”.
