Italian Restaurants in Notting Hill
1. Chucs Westbourne Grove
Italian restaurant in Notting Hill
226 Westbourne Grove - W11
Aiming for a taste of La Dolce Vita lifestyle, these retro-glam Italian cafés and restaurants mostly occupy the same sites as the eponymous clothing brand, and deliver classic casual Italian menus mixing pizza and pasta (both typically over £20 a plate) with both more and less substantial dishes. A brief involvement with Zaha Hadid’s Serpentine restaurant has ended, but a new, sixth branch debuted in July 2021 in the heart of St John’s Wood (on the site of a former Côte). With 84 covers, it’s the largest outlet to-date and opens all day from breakfast.
2. Mediterraneo
Italian restaurant in Notting Hill
37 Kensington Park Rd - W11
This “enjoyable and reasonably priced” Italian in Notting Hill is “always full and busy” – perhaps because it delivers exactly “the sort of food one thinks one would have on holiday in Italy”. The same team is also behind two other Italian venues in the same street, Osteria Basilico and Essenza – so clearly they know what locals like.
3. Osteria Basilico
Italian restaurant in Notting Hill
29 Kensington Park Rd - W11
“A good package of food and buzz”, this “classic Italian trattoria” has served Notting Hill for three decades – “and delivers the goods reliably and with panache”. It has two younger stablemates in the same street – Essenza and Mediterraneo.
4. Essenza
Italian restaurant in Notting Hill
210 Kensington Park Road - W11
2019 Review: Mixed and limited feedback on this smart Notting Hill Italian. To fans it’s a favourite with top class cooking (speciality black and white truffles) and a romantic interior – to the odd detractor it’s not bad, merely “forgettable”.
5. Portobello Ristorante Pizzeria
Italian restaurant in Notting Hill
7 Ladbroke Road - W11
A “friendly Italian serving great fresh fish” (dramatically displayed in a chiller cabinet) – this Notting Hill local has a “real buzz” – and is “always reassuringly full of Italians”. It also serves “top pizza – among a lot of competition”, and a decent range of pasta dishes. There’s a “great year-round terrace with a roof which opens in the summer”.
6. Caractère
Mediterranean restaurant in Kensington and Chelsea
209 Westbourne Park Road - W11
“The food is the centrepiece” at Emily Roux (daughter of Michel) and her husband Diego Ferrari’s (former head chef of Le Gavroche) “gem tucked away in Notting Hill”, which has established a strong foodie following. “The French/Italian theme to the cooking works well”, delivering “strong flavours with a light touch” from “an interesting menu whose dishes are a little out of the ordinary”. Service is “fabulous and personal” too, which helps make for “a very special meal out” in this comfortable, “cosy” space. “Surely it’s getting a star some time soon?”
7. Edera
Italian restaurant in Holland Park
148 Holland Park Ave - W11
Limited but good all-round feedback on this smart neighbourhood Italian in Holland Park, whose menu features some interesting Sardinian dishes. ‘Temporarily closed’ as we go to press, we have rated it on its historical performance and hope of a reopening some time soon.
8. Assaggi Bar & Pizzeria
Italian restaurant in Bayswater
39 Chepstow Place - W2
2021 Review: “Extraordinarily good pizzas”, “very good negronis” and “no burgers” are served at this bar, which boasts “the style of Mayfair transplanted to Notting Hill”. It’s upstairs from Assaggi, and from the same team, in the former pub they share, and these days seems the less risky bet. Top Tip – “try the truffle pizza in winter and English asparagus with San Daniele ham in summer”.
