Polish Restaurants in London
1. Ognisko Restaurant Polish restaurant in South Kensington 55 Prince's Gate, Exhibition Road - SW7
“What a wonderful oasis of calm in the hustle of London’s museum area” – this “elegant dining room of a Polish emigrés’ club” (open to the general public) has a “wonderful 19th-century vibe” and is a “civilised and reliable” setting that’s both “cosy in winter” and with a particularly “beautiful terrace for summer”. Its “authentic traditional Polish fare” is “charmingly served” in “huge portions” with lashings of vodka and some interesting wines.
2. Baltic Polish restaurant in Waterloo 74 Blackfriars Rd - SE1
“A real surprise” near The Cut – this well-established fixture (which opened in 2001) has a relatively “humble entrance”, which opens onto a “great space”: an intriguingly converted Georgian factory, with a fun bar, and an unexpectedly large, “light-filled” dining room. The cuisine is enjoyably unusual too: “modern Polish – not the usual heavy, East European dishes”, but “gutsy” and “always imaginative, with new and traditional choices”. Go easy on the vodka though: over 60 varieties, all served straight from the deep freeze in frozen glasses.
3. Daquise Polish restaurant in South Kensington 20 Thurloe St - SW7
“Faded old-world charm and traditional hearty food” (“stuffed cabbage most enjoyable with potato vodka”) are the hallmarks of this “historic Polish gem” (est 1947) near South Ken tube, where legendary restaurant critics Jonathan Meades and the late AA Gill used to meet regularly for lunch. Even if dishes can be “stodgy” they are “wonderfully authentic” and in “robust portions”, and act as a portal to “the distant past”.
