British, Modern Restaurants in Penzance
1. The Shore
Fish & seafood restaurant in Penzance
13-14 Alverton Street - TR18
“Bruce Rennie is a wizard with fish, which is fresh from day boats in nearby Newlyn” – the reason to discover this small, modern bistro. “He now only offers a set, taster-style menu, but the food is brilliant considering it is only him at the stoves. Well worth a visit, but booking is absolutely essential”.
2. Victoria Inn
British, Modern restaurant in Perranuthnoe
Ancient, low-ceilinged coastal Cornish pub, not far from St Michael’s Mount, with a sunny beer garden. The food has been well-rated in recent times, but reports last year – which saw the departure of chef Nik Boyle to start his own (short-lived) venture in Falmouth – have been a little more up-and-down, so we’ve left a rating till next year.
3. The Old Coastguard
British, Modern restaurant in Mousehole
The Parade - TR19
A “perfect setting” looking out to the sea and St Michael’s Mount awaits at this “laidback”, boutique-ish hotel dining room, where the current regime – shared with the Gurnard’s Head – turn out “exceedingly tasty” fish-centric food. In June 2019, there was a fire, and until early 2020, the Old Coastguard team was cooking at The Vault (17-18 Market Pl, Penzance TR18 2JP - tel 01736 733033).
