Featured Derbyshire Restaurants
1. Stones
British, Modern restaurant in Matlock
1C Dale Rd - DE4
“Excellent in every way” – Kevin Stone’s modern British cooking with Mediterranean flourishes is showcased at the pretty restaurant he runs with his wife Jade and sister Katie, perched above the River Derwent (and with a terrace for sunny days). Prices are brilliant for food of this quality, with an eight-course tasting menu at £52.
2. The Duncombe Arms
British, Modern restaurant in Ellastone
Main Rd - DE6
2019 Review: This “superbly renovated building in lovely countryside” in “the middle of nowhere” in particular – on the edge of the Peak District and “accessible from the culinary desert of North Staffordshire” – is “busy for good reason”: from a “shortish menu” the food is of “tip top” quality.
3. Devonshire Arms at Beeley
British, Modern restaurant in Beeley
Devonshire Square - DE4
“Recently refitted”, the contemporary interiors of this Chatsworth Estate pub is at odds with its period, stone-clad exterior. All reports say the food – which is served from breakfast onwards, from a range of menus – is of dependably high quality. Top Tip – attractive garden terrace for the summer months.
4. Jack Rabbits
Sandwiches, cakes, etc restaurant in Ashbourne
10 Saint John Street - DE6
Good all-round, if limited, feedback on this trendily designed ‘café and kitchen’ at the back of The Greenman complex, which serves an all-day ‘brunch & lunch’ menu.
5. Nonna’s

Located on the historic Brampton Mile, Chatsworth road the gateway to the peaks, Nonnas Chesterfield founded in 2009 is the perfect location to immerse yourself in modern Italian lifestyle. Offering an array of award winning wines, Brunch, grazing lunches, inventive a la carte a...
6. Fischers at Baslow Hall
British, Modern restaurant in Baslow
Calver Rd - DE45
“In the Peak District, close to Chatsworth House, Baslow Hall is much more modern than it at first appears up its little hill from the road and – surrounded by a vibrant kitchen garden – it provides a very romantic destination”. Rupert Rowley, chef of 17 years’ standing, upped sticks in early 2019, leaving sous chef James Payne to step into his shoes. Michelin removed their star on the back of the change, but we’ve maintained the survey’s very good ratings, and will reassess next year if necessary.
7. The Samuel Fox Country Inn
British, Modern restaurant in Bradwell
Stretfield Rd - S33
James Duckett’s “tastefully decorated” inn is set in the Peak District National Park with wonderful views of the Hope Valley. It offers a wide variety of dining options – from bargain early evening menus to tasting menu options – “top notch” fairly traditional cooking provided by “friendly and efficient staff”. Top Menu Tip – “legendary sticky toffee pudding”.
8. The Peacock at Rowsley
British, Modern restaurant in Rowsley
Bakewell Rd - DE4
2019 Review: A rather traditionally decorated country house hotel in the Peak District (dating from 1652, and with gardens bordering the River Derwent) with both a bar and ambitious (if pricey) restaurant, where Dan Smith’s cooking continues to win very solid ratings. There’s a range of menus, running up to a 10-course tasting option.
9. The Bay Tree Restaurant
British, Modern restaurant in Melbourne
4 Potter St - DE73
2017 Review: The “very popular champagne breakfast” continues to draw particular shout-outs at this stylish, contemporary restaurant in this pretty little town; at other times it offers a prix fixe menu focussing on New World cuisine.
10. Ebi Sushi
Japanese restaurant in Derby
59 Abbey St - DE22
“Exceptional quality” Japanese fare has long drawn workers from the Toyota factory down the road to this dinky outfit, and while its appearance is “slightly at the café end of the spectrum, when the food’s this good who cares?”
