A “very enjoyable and original menu of small and large plates is eaten with a great view of the countryside” (particularly from the conservatory, though you can also eat in the bar) at this “always superb” 12th-century inn – Visit England’s pub of the year in 2023, and – even more impressively – the fifth oldest pub in the land. PS – if you want to linger in the Peak District, they now have five luxury bedrooms as well as a stand-alone cottage, ‘The Barn’.

Visit England’s pub of the year in 2023, this renovated, twelfth-century Peak District inn’s other claim to fame is being the fifth oldest pub in the country. Feedback on its conservatory dining room was more limited than we’d like this year, but acclaims its “excellent food, lovely view and proficient service”. There’s an eclectic selection of modern pub grub, or you can choose to dine from the focused (four choices for each course) dinner menu at £39.50 for two courses.

“Great renovation of an ancient inn, successfully brought back from dereliction” – this twelfth-century Peak District building is said to be the fifth-oldest pub in the country. It’s “excellent at every level”, serving “really good food” mostly sourced from within 10 miles, while the “newly added rooms look fantastic and will undoubtedly make this a destination”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Very enjoyable and original menu of small and large plates eaten with a great view of the country side. Well spaced tables and a clam atmosphere so you can have a good conversation without having to shout. On the current menu the asparagus and buttermilk mushrooms stood out amongst our choices but all were good "
