Hospitality couple go it alone in Arundel

Husband-and-wife team Matthew and Jennifer Price this week opened their debut restaurant – The Townhouse, a Grade II-listed property with four bedrooms opposite Arundel Castle in West Sussex, which they are launching without staff.

Matthew is a former head chef at Steve Drake’s highly rated Sorrel in Dorking, where Jennifer – who grew up in Arundel – was front-of-house manager. The couple met while working together at the Spread Eagle Hotel in Midhurst, and have worked as a team in a number of venues around the country.

They said ahead of opening: “We couldn’t have dreamt that our journey together, from Amberley Castle to Wiltshire and both West and East coasts of Scotland, could have eventually led us back home to open our first restaurant with rooms here in the heart of Arundel.

It is our opportunity to launch our vision of what hospitality and great food should be, and we are so excited to share this experience with our guests.”

Matthew is offering a hyper-seasonal seven-course tasting menu relying on local South Coast produce – included foraged ingredients he collects himself.

He says: “Our ethos is not simply about a meal, or a stay – we want to create memories, through thoughtful, well-executed dishes and warm, heartfelt hospitality.

By offering rooms on-site, we invite our guests to fully immerse in an experience — to linger over a final glass of wine, unhurried, unperturbed.

The Townhouse rooms and restaurant are open four days a week, from Wednesday to Friday, with extra days around the Arundel Festival and Goodwood.
