Swedish chef Joakim ‘Jokke’ Almqvist launches the latest edition of Punk Royale, his “messy, no-bullshit” take on Nordic fine dining, in London today (12 September) – vowing “we’re not here to play it safe“.
Jokke founded Punk Royale in Stockholm in 2015 and followed up with branches in Copenhagen and Oslo. The new venue, just off Piccadilly in Sackville Street, is his first permanent site outside Scandinavia, although he ran a successful residency at Carousel in Fitzrovia five years ago.
Described as “part performance, part dinner party”, Punk Royale is known for hefty caviar bumps accompanied by vodka shots and for dishes like oysters poached in green curry served on the shell and topped with frozen apple.
Ahead of the launch Jokke said: “We’ve always done things our way, and with all the love and very positive response from our patrons to a couple of pop-ups in London throughout the years, this just seems like the natural and exciting next step in our journey.”
The new London venue, which has taken over the site formerly occupied by short-lived restaurants Amethyst and London Stock, serves a set dinner of 18 courses (and possibly more) including an “opulent” drinks pairing at £220 per person (£200 per person with non-alcoholic drinks).
