A female-led wine bar and bistro which celebrates wines made by women producers opens this weekend in the heritage Menier Chocolate Factory building opposite Borough Market.
Launched by Parisienne wine expert Carole Bryon, Lady of the Grapes focuses on organic, biodynamic and natural wines on a 400-strong list. It follows the smaller wine bar of the same name she opened in Covent Garden in 2018.
Lady of the Grapes has taken over the ground floor and basement at one end of the 1870 building, which it shares with the Menier Chocolate Factory theatre. There is a 60-cover bistro with terrace on the ground floor and a more intimate speakeasy-style wine bar called Forbidden Fruit in the basement, serving charcuterie.
The kitchen is led by Matyáš Plzák (previously of Frog by Adam Handling, Frenchie and Mãos), with a menu of timeless French classics like Oeuf meurette with lardons and red wine sauce and Comté soufflé to start, followed by Bresse chicken poached with morels and vin jaune sauce or Lamb chops with mint Grenobloise, peas, artichokes and lamb jus, with Paris-Brest for dessert.
