Venison tops the menu at new South Downs dining pub

A new restaurant-with-rooms headed by Le Gavroche-trained chef Grant Jones has opened in the South Downs National Park. The White Horse, a former pub in Graffham, is close to Cowdray, Goodwood and Petworth in West Sussex.

With a 38-cover dining area, private dining room for 10, garden with outdoor kitchen for the summer and six bedrooms, the White Horse is owned by tech entrepreneur Glen Manchester and his wife Asta. He made his fortune as the founder of Thunderhead, providing customer engagement technology to companies around the world.

Grant has worked as a private chef since leaving Le Gavroche. At the White Horse he is offering an 8-course tasting menu at £120 alongside an à la carte menu, which includes some pubby options such as shepherd’s pie.

Local produce is a major feature, with game provided by the area’s gamekeepers – in particular venison from the national park sourced via the Sussex Woods Deer Management Scheme, an initiative aimed at reducing the population of fallow deer to allow the regeneration of woodland. Fish comes directly from a father-and-son team who operate a small dayboat from Chichester harbour, while the wine list includes bottles from the nearby Roebuck Estates.
