Banqueting with Macbeth (no sign of Banquo’s ghost)

Well-known Hoxton pub the Macbeth is to reopen this month with a Portuguese-inspired menu from chef Jamie Allan, part of the team which revived the Plimsoll and Tollington’s in Finsbury Park.

Jamie, who will run the pub with his friend Patrick Nolan, said the Macbeth represents “a beautiful opportunity to work in a part of London that feels very close to my heart”.

The pair have installed a brand-new oak bar and restored a Victorian mural showing the banquet scene from Shakespeare’s play that has ensured the enduring fame of the 11th-century Scottish king.

As half of the ‘Four Legs’ partnership with Ed McIlroy, Jamie has had great success in recent years with the relaunch of the Plimsoll, previously a “grotty Arsenal pub” whose “tasty and elevated pub food” earns a 4/5 rating in the latest Harden’s guide. They followed that with the transformation of former chippie Tollington’s into a Spanish-inspired seafood spot.

At the Macbeth, Jamie is taking his culinary cues from the ‘tascas’ of Portugal, traditional family-run operations offering simple home-cooked dishes. Food will apparently be served until late in the evening.
