Featured Whitstable Restaurants
1. Samphire
British, Modern restaurant in Whitstable
4 High Street - CT5
“Always very busy”, this “cosy little café/bistro” on Whitstable’s main drag has a “friendly owner and staff” and an “interesting menu using locally sourced products”. It’s “especially good – and good value – for lunch or brunch”.
2. Wheelers Oyster Bar
Fish & seafood restaurant in Whitstable
8 High Street - CT5
“With its unmissable, pink exterior, the original Wheelers” (est. 1856, and for a time the base of a now-defunct mini-chain) – this “tiny”, “snug” and “eccentric” oddity feels “a little like eating in the back room of a small house, decorated in a ‘domestic style’, with ornaments on the mantelpiece and patterned tablecloths, and with tables a little packed-close”. “But, it has a brilliant professional kitchen out back” and serves “exceptional” fish and “truly excellent seafood” (“so local oysters are a must-have”), while the ability to “BYO makes it very good value”. “You need to book well in advance”, although it’s “easier to get a table now the extension has been built” with the capacity recently doubled to about 30.
3. East Coast Dining Room
British, Modern restaurant in Whitstable
101 Tankerton Rd - CT5
2018 Review: A “small minimalist-style restaurant near the seafront at Tankerton”, and offering “modern British cooking, well cooked and presented” (the latter drawing Londonites as well as locals).
4. Whitstable Oyster Fishery Co.
Fish & seafood restaurant in Whitstable
Royal Native Oyster Stores, Horsebridge - CT5
“A fantastic, atmospheric location on the beach at Whitstable, plus supreme seafood” is an enduring recipe for success at this “lovely venue, in a candle-filled, rustic, quirky space” – both “large and lively but also with intimate tables”. “It’s not clever cooking, but they use good quality fish and the oysters are excellent”. “Service can be a little off-kilter at times” but escaped any serious flak last year.
5. Pearson’s Arms
British, Traditional restaurant in Whitstable
The Horsebridge, Sea Wall - CT5
“Quaint” old pub (downstairs) and restaurant (upstairs) “with great views over the beach” to the Thames Estuary. Chef Richard Phillips’s versatile menus encompass a “good-value” set lunch, and are marked by a “good use of fish and local ingredients”. “Slow service” can be a bugbear.
6. Crab & Winkle
Fish & seafood restaurant in Whitstable
South Quay, Whitstable Harbour - CT5
“Excellent fish and seafood, especially oysters” come at “reasonable prices” in this unassumingly decorated harbour-view café, also boasting its own agreeable terrace.
7. JoJo's
Mediterranean restaurant in Whitstable
2 Herne Bay Rd - CT5
A “favourite” among locals for its “amazing Mediterranean tapas and super views”, this appealing little venue at the Tankerton end of Whitstable has “great food and atmos, with a laid-back seaside vibe”.
8. Krishna
Indian restaurant in Whitstable
49 Old Bridge Road - CT5
2018 Review: “Situated by Whitstable station, this Indian does not look special until you check out the refreshingly different menu”; and, “when the food arrives, it’s delicious and well spiced” too.
9. The Lobster Shack Restaurant
Fish & seafood restaurant in Whitstable
East Quay - CT5
“Just about the best lobster and fries I’ve ever had – for under £20!” – the appeal of this good-value spot “well hidden” by Whitstable harbour, with outdoor tables overlooking the sea. They excel by serving line-caught fish and local shellfish “just kept simple”. Just one quibble last year: “why no puddings?”. Sister venue the Oyster Shed is nearby.
10. Thai Orchid
Thai restaurant in Whitstable
82 Middle Wall - CT5
2019 Review: “A new and welcome addition to the dining scene in Whitstable” – this bright and airy modern café provides “great tasting food and very friendly service” and is “excellent value”.
