Italian Restaurants in City Of Edinburgh
1. Locanda de Gusti Italian restaurant in Edinburgh 102 Dalry Road - EH11
‘Good food from Naples’ is the bold claim on the front of this well-known pizza joint, five minutes walk from Haymarket station, and – though reports were not numerous last year – all feedback is good.
2. Rico's Italian restaurant in Edinburgh 58a Castle Street - EH2
Taking over the site of Martin Wishart's The Honour is local restaurateur Stefano Pieraccini of The Rocca Group, which also includes The Broughton and The Seafood Ristorante in St Andrews. Italian dishes are made with locally-sourced Scottish ingredients.
3. Bonnie & Wild Scottish Marketplace Scottish restaurant in Edinburgh St James Quarter, 415-417 St James Crescent - EH1
Opening in July 2021 after five years of development, the largest food hall in Scotland (and the first in Edinburgh) will feature independent Scottish food and drink producers; restaurants signed up so far include Erpingham House and Glasgow's The Gannet. Bonnie & Wild is the brainchild of Mac & Wild
4. Mono Italian restaurant in Edinburgh 85 South Bridge - EH1
“Making other fine dining establishments in town look somewhat staid, out of touch and overpriced” – this April 2018 newcomer is “superb”, and some would say “the best restaurant to have opened in Edinburgh in recent times”. “A charismatic space” with “splendid service” – “the reference on its website to ‘progressive Italian dining’ is accurate” and the modern cuisine is “outstanding” – “go downstairs to see the kitchen in action”. To match the fine cooking there’s “an exceptional, mostly Italian, wine list”.
5. Divino Enoteca Italian restaurant in Edinburgh 5 Merchant St - EH1
This “stylish and relaxed” Italian wine bar and restaurant occupies a basement in the Old Town, and provides a “guaranteed night out” with “high-class food” and in particular an “excellent wine list” – “under the masterly direction of maître d’ Silvio Praino”. Part of the Vittoria group owned by a branch of the Italo-Scottish Crolla clan, it celebrates its 10th anniversary last year.
6. Contini George Street Italian restaurant in Edinburgh 103 George Street - EH2
A converted banking hall provides the “amazing setting” for Victor and Carina Contini’s relanched venture, which now puts small plates centre stage. Reporters praise the “good Italian food with very fresh ingredients” but “friendly and professional staff” also play a big part in “making this place a pleasure”.
7. Valvona & Crolla Italian restaurant in Edinburgh 19 Elm Row - EH7
The all-day caffè-bar attached to Edinburgh’s legendary Italian deli (est. 1934) is most tipped for a quality coffee-stop or light bite. Open later on Friday and Saturday evenings, the big draw is a wine list, which “must be the best Italian-based (and priced) in the UK” – effectively it includes every bottle stocked in the deli’s drinks department, for the shop price plus a £5 corkage charge. The accompanying food is “OK… enjoyable” but unlikely to evoke Tuscan hillsides, the Amalfi coast…
8. Favorita Pizza restaurant in Edinburgh 325 Leith Walk - EH6
In Leith Walk, this “family-orientated” staple can be relied upon for “superb” wood-fired pizzas, pastas and so forth in a “buzzing atmosphere”.
10. Cucina Italian restaurant in Edinburgh 1 George IV Bridge - EH1
In the Old Town hotel formerly known as Hotel Missoni, Cucina is a lavishly-decorated restaurant serving "Italian fare with a Scottish twist".
