Featured Ambleside Restaurants
1. The Forest Side British, Modern restaurant in Grasmere
“The food is similar in style to L’Enclume” (chef Kevin Tickle moved here from Cartmel) at this “superb” establishment, where practically all diners are “blown away by the whole experience: the interesting depth and combination of flavours, the foraged ingredients, and the different cooking techniques – all matched with some wonderful wines” (of the biodynamique variety). It’s a “non-stuffy dining”, Scandi-style room in a “very friendly”, but “professional” and “classy” hotel, set in “gorgeous Lakeland countryside”. “Costly true, but worth every penny”. “We will definitely be going back even though it’s a 5 hour drive away!”
2. Drunken Duck British, Modern restaurant in Ambleside Barngates - LA22
This “lively and lovely gastropub with rooms” has been run for more than 40 years by co-owner Staf Barton. Head chef Jonny Watson’s food is “always reliably good” and staff are “friendly”. Perhaps it’s “more a restaurant than a pub”, but it does have its own Barngates microbrewery on site.
3. Old Stamp House British, Modern restaurant in Ambleside Church St - LA22
Ryan Blackburn’s “imaginative” cooking using “great local produce in unusual combinations” continues “to improve” and to mightily impress practically all who comment on his “pocket-sized” basement in the centre of the town. As well as an à la carte option, there’s a ‘signature’ menu.
4. Lake Road Kitchen Scandinavian restaurant in Ambleside 3 Sussex House, Lake Road - LA22
“Wow! What a find” – real raves for Noma grad James Cross’s woodsy, Scandi-style outfit, which “focuses on foraging and extreme seasonality”. It’s “not just fabulous locally sourced ingredients” that impress, but the “immersive theatrical experience”, featuring “knowledgeable and detailed explanations of each dish” (“double wow”, the tasting menus are affordable too). Ratings, though, were depressed this year by a minority who feel the venture “never quite lives up to its promise”.
5. Fellini's Vegetarian restaurant in Ambleside Church St - LA22
A “vegetarian restaurant attached to a cinema” whose “interesting menu” and “really good” cooking make it a solid choice if you’re in the market for an Italian meal – especially given that there’s “no competition” locally.
6. Zeffirelli’s Vegetarian restaurant in Ambleside Compston Rd - LA22
A “very popular” veggie veteran of nearly four decades’ standing in the same complex as the eponymous cinema and jazz café (cue film and food deals); there’s “plenty of choice for pizza lovers” and “despite being busy”, service remains “efficient”.
