Opened way back in the heyday of Britpop (1996), Chrissy & Andy Hill’s Grasmere stalwart started out serving homemade cakes, but its menu has expanded over the years to take in everything from handmade pastas to curries and ‘Jumble Room mainstays’ like Chrissy’s classic gingerbread with hot toffee sauce. There’s “always a buzz” in the eclectically decorated restaurant but, for one longtime fan, it is the “great food that keeps us going back”. PS – The owners also run bijou B&B the ‘Randy Pike’, on the outskirts of Ambleside.

Over a quarter of a century old, Chrissy & Andy Hill’s village restaurant continues to inspire approving reviews: “service is very good and friendly and the food is good middle-of-the-road fare: perfect for when you need to eat on holiday”. As their website confirms, they are “feeling the staffing pressures with more limited opening times” of late.

“We love this family-run restaurant in Grasmere” – say fans of Chrissy & Andy Hill’s “quirky” 25-year-old, where “a short but very interesting menu” encompasses influences from around the world. Chrissy says she cooks what she likes to eat, which might range from home-made pasta to Middle Eastern dishes, using mainly Lakeland produce.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
