Harden's survey result
Summary
Built in 1891, this turreted Victorian landmark has a dramatic waterside position and recently emerged from a major upgrade, complete with glass-fronted dining room. The cuisine wins a good all-round rep in feedback: in particular the “amazing afternoon tea, with some lovely interesting touches in dish choices (I didn’t know where to start!), all wrapped up with the most amazing view over Lake Windermere”.
Summary
Positioned on the edge of Lake Windermere, the restaurant at Langdale Chase is closed at the time of writing while it undergoes a multi-million pound refit, with re-opening planned for late 2023. In July 2023, owner Daniel Thwaites announced the appointment of chef Michael Cole to steer the kitchen for the main dining room, whose floor-to-ceiling windows overlook the lake and the Coniston Fells.
For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

The chef
Chef: David Bewick
I started working in catering over 20 years ago, within a hotel on the outskirts of the Lake District. My passion for cooking soon took me to the Savoy in London where I was fortunate to train amongst great chefs such as Gordon Ramsey and Marcus Wearing.
An opportunity to work under Nigel Howarth, a chef I had always admired, brought me back up North to work as Sous Chef at Northcote Manor in 2006. In this Michelin star kitchen, I refined my cooking skills and learnt many new techniques that have stayed with me throughout my career.
Working in the Lake District has always excited me as I truly believe it is at the forefront of culinary excellence in the UK. We are fortunate to have excellent local produce and a network of fabulous chefs with contrasting styles to gain inspiration from. I have enjoyed working in some of the best kitchens in the area such as the Rampsbeck with 3 Rosettes and the Lindeth Howe with 2 Rosettes.
For six years, myself and my wife were proud to run the Porto Restaurant in Bowness where we consistently achieved 2 rosettes. We loved providing award-winning dining, delivering freshly-prepared food and using locally-sourced seasonal ingredients from the best regional suppliers. When we started a young family, we decided to leave the Porto to get a better work-life balance, but I now feel that I am ready for the next exciting chapter of my culinary career with Langdale Chase.
I love working with presenting the different flavours and textures of food. I am consistently inspired by the culinary world, which is constantly evolving through the progression and development of new ideas, new trends and new techniques. I believe in simplicity and expression through food dishes and hope to create meals that people can relate to.
Seasonality is key, with our menus in the bar and restaurant changing to reflect the time of year and the produce available. I hope to get involved in local food festivals and culinary cooking courses from the hotel. I am proud to be developing a team that is motivated and passionate about the food that is produced from Langdale Chase, and I hope to take it from strength to strength.
