“Magnificent views over Lake Windermere” are part of the appeal of this celebrated county hotel, which gained a fancy new glass-walled restaurant, wine cellar and chef’s table a few years back. It attracted the odd middling rating last year, but most feedback has remained very upbeat as chef Robby Jenks (from Newbury’s Vineyard at Stockcross) succeeded Peter Howarth in spring 2019, and we’ve maintained its ratings as an “amazing” all-rounder.

“The food and ambience have been raised to a different level” at this acclaimed country hotel, which unveiled a new glass-walled restaurant, wine cellar, chef’s table and chef (Peter Howarth, ex-of Gidleigh Park) in October 2017. It won real paeans this year for its “wonderful” food (taking in “superb” tasting menus) and “the perfect setting overlooking Lake Windermere” (“the best view of any restaurant I’ve ever been to”).

This stylish Windermere landmark recently reopened after major works adding a glass dining room extension, clutch of bedrooms and chef’s table – and reporters are wowed by the “most impressive new surroundings”. In October 2017 Peter Howarth (of the Latymer Restaurant at Pennyhill Park Hotel) was due to step in, following the departure of Nick Edgar after a very successful 20-month stint. Hopefully he can keep up the “stunning” standard.

For 30 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Superb. The wonderful view over Lake Windermere through floor to ceiling windows adds to the fantastic food, all beautifully cooked and presented and much of it locally sourced. Friendly efficient service. Feels very covid secure, with tables well spaced and staff wearing face coverings"
