This “lively and lovely gastropub with rooms” has been run for more than 40 years by co-owner Staf Barton. Head chef Jonny Watson’s food is “always reliably good” and staff are “friendly”. Perhaps it’s “more a restaurant than a pub”, but it does have its own Barngates microbrewery on site.

“A remote, cosy inn (and microbrewery) in the Lakeland Fells” that owes its high popularity to its cooking with “amazing attention to detail” and “exemplary service”.

For 30 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"We stopped for lunch while on holiday in the area after reading many articles recommending the food here. The pub building is welcoming and the views toward the distant fells are rewarding for people sitting outside having a beer or two. The dining room with its part open kitchen and bare plastered walls felt very end of the last century. The food was disapointing and didn't stack up against reviews we had seen a cheese and chive souffle was flat and lacked the richness of the cheese, a venison loin and suet pudding, lacked venison in the filling and simply wasn't good enough at half the price. We decided to cut our loses and declined the offer of desert which was met with an audiable sign of displeasure. Heaven knows why I didn't respond in kind when I was instructed on how to add a tip on the pos machine. "
