Harden's survey result
Summary
“Just the right balance of superb food and unrivalled service” maintains high ratings for Simon Rogan’s less formal venue in a beamed cottage just around the corner from L’Enclume, where many visitors also stay the night. The Tyre Men have felt it necessary to bless it with a star, but it’s a step-down ambition-wise (and price-wise) from its famous sibling – lunch is a three-course selection for £49 per person, and dinner six courses for £95 per person.
Summary
“Excellent dinners and amazing breakfasts” both win praise for Simon Rogan’s less formal venue in a beamed cottage just around the corner from his famous foodie temple (and here you can also stay the night). It was responsible for some excellent meals this year, and while the food is in a more straightforward mould than L’Enclume, it’s above-par by the standards of a Cumbrian neighbourhood restaurant. That said, it doesn‘t inspire poetic feedback – diners merely think it’s very good at what it does.
Summary
“Very slick and professional, and more relaxed than L’Enclume” – this spin-off from Simon Rogan’s mothership around the corner affords a more buzzy and approachable (and bookable!) alternative to his main operation (and there is also the option to stay the night). “Super tasty and joyful” dishes are “impeccably served” from a three-course menu for £79 per person. “Stayed with them too and the breakfast was spectacular!”
Summary
“This sibling to L’Enclume is much more relaxed than its big sister around the corner” (much “more chance of getting a reservation” too!) with “a wonderful buzzy atmosphere” and the option to stay the night. In all respects, “it’s more conventional in style” and not aiming for pyrotechnics like Simon Rogan’s nearby mothership. “You still get the same attentiveness to detail” and “precise preparation” but the “cuisine is more traditional (if usually with a twist)” from an “interesting seasonal menu”. Feedback was a little uneven this year, though, with ratings dragged down by a small number of “hit and miss” meals, particularly regarding service. Top Tip – “great home delivery food” too from an “ever-changing selection”.
For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
