Stewarded by father-and-son duo David & Lewis Moss for two decades, this “fantastic Dales inn” (notably friendly to doggos) has a prime setting in the national park, and combines “friendly service” with “great food” that (despite the name) is notably fish-centric. If you want to make a night of it, they have pleasant themed rooms (including one dedicated to 007, to assuage fans irritated by the long delayed next instalment) and a private two-bedroom cottage just a few steps away.

In a “superb setting in the Dales”, father-and-son team Lewis & David Moss are behind this quintessential gastropub-with-rooms (including one room with a James Bond theme). “The team is superb, and the food (including seafood) speaks for itself as getting a table at short notice is extremely difficult”. NB – canines will love it (“the most dog-friendly pub I’ve ever visited!”), down to getting their very own sausages for brekko.

“Very good seafood” makes a somewhat surprising speciality for this gastropub/hotel in the Yorkshire Dales – but there’s “a lot else besides” (“vegetarian, meat, superb desserts”) and it’s “all excellent”. “What a great place to dine and stay”“welcomes kids and dogs, too, so a great holiday venue”.

This “unexpected gem” is “a true gastropub/hotel serving seafood in the middle of the Dales”, despite its name – and despite an inland setting almost as far as you can get in Yorkshire from either the North or the Irish Sea coast. This “can be a little confusing – almost as if it can’t make its mind up whether it’s a meat or a fish restaurant” – given that there’s a ‘grill-room’ list of steaks alongside the lobster and other seafood. Still, the food is all “very good quality”, while “service is always impeccable and discreet”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
