On the fringe of Islington north of Chapel Market, Jordan & Chyna Johnson’s five-year-old haunt wins praise (if from a small fan club) for its “amazingly inventive vegan Caribbean food”.

Easily missed as you zoom out of Camden Town, it’s worth discovering Roger Shakes’s low-key but high-quality neighbourhood venue on the main drag. Originally from Westmoreland, Jamaica (and a former head chef at Mango Rooms), he provides one of London’s better options for a Caribbean meal.

In Brockley from the second half of 2024: the first permanent site for Daniel and Heleena Maynard (known for Jerk Off BBQ in Deptford). In his August 2024 review, the Standard’s Jimi Famurewa underwent some “oddly perplexing moments” but applauded an “immensely likeable slice of British-Caribbean cool”. And in November 2024, Jay Rayner enjoyed himself at this ex-chippy now serving a “short, impressively cheap menu of small plates” in a “mellow and bubbling” space: “the sort of comfort food that would make any bad day better”.
