1. Uli
Pan-Asian restaurant in Notting Hill

“Relaxed and busy”, Michael Lim’s Notting Hill venue is “always a treat”, with “great Singaporean and other Asian dishes”. It has notched up 26 years, first in All Saints Road and more recently in smart new premises on Ladbroke Road. A second branch opened in Seymour Place, Marylebone, in June 2023. Top Tip – “fantastic in the summer with the roof open”.

3. Tom Yum
Thai restaurant in Amersham
101 Sycamore Road - HP6
“Super Thai food” makes this “rather cramped” but otherwise “lovely” local fixture “really worth a visit” according to fans (albeit one that’s also popular for takeaway) and it’s great value for money too; from Tuesday to Saturday they do a lunchtime noodle bar.
4. Rosa's Thai Cafe
Thai restaurant in Ealing
33 Haven Green - W5
2021 Review: The “lovely Thai food” at these reliable cafés is “impressively authentic given that they are a chain” – “excellent value” and “fast”, if occasionally let down by “iffy service”. Founded in 2008 by Saiphin and Alex Moore, who inherited the name of their first East End site, the group has 18 branches in London and expanded to Liverpool, Manchester, Reading (delivery only) and Leeds following the sale of a majority stake to US investors. The couple also have two spin-offs, Lao Café in Covent Garden and the new Chinese noodle bar Hoh Sek in St Katharine Docks.

6. Patara
Thai restaurant in Camden
82 Hampstead High St - NW3
“Generous portions” of “reliably excellent Thai food” have kept the six London branches of Khun Patara Sila-On’s international group busy for more than 30 years. Although known for its value for money, there were one or two grumbles about “price increases” this year, but full agreement that you get “a consistently great bargain on their lunch deal”.
7. 101 Thai Kitchen
Thai restaurant in Hammersmith
352 King St - W6
This “exciting local gem” near Stamford Brook serves “excellent Thai cuisine in a no-nonsense setting”, attracting aficionados from far and wide who warm to an “authenticity” that makes it “almost an ‘in-country’ experience”. The uninitiated may miss the point other than the good prices. Top Tip – “if they say something is hot, believe them!”
8. Poppy’s Thai Eatery 3
Thai restaurant in Hammersmith
129-131 Brackenbury Road - W6
“Good home-cooked Thai food” at “bargain” prices keeps guests coming back to this trio of Hammersmith neighbourhood cafés, distinctively crammed full of retro bric-a-brac. They serve English breakfasts and afternoon teas by day.
9. Poppy’s Thai Eatery
Thai restaurant in Hammersmith
78 Glenthorne Road - W6

10. Chet's
Thai restaurant in Shepherd's Bush
Hoxton Hotel, 65 Shepherd's Bush Green - W12
“Part of the ongoing gentrification of Shepherd’s Bush” – LA chef Kris Yenbamroong has found a permanent showcase for his US-style ‘nu Thai’ cuisine at the new Hoxton Hotel overlooking Shepherd’s Bush Green. It’s “surprisingly fun”… “lively, tasty, and fairly priced”. The food is brash and impactful (“I had a delish bowl of fries, deep-fried chicken wings with hot sauce and tuna melt sandwich with a refreshing lychee lemonade”), while “large rounds of beer heading to most tables often contributes to the merriment”. A few reporters do have quibbles – that the “sharing plate concept doesn’t really work gastronomically”; or that the “LA influence is too horribly sweet, missing out on the salty and sour components of good Thai cooking”. But even some critics feel it’s “finding its feet: I’ve been back four times since December and the menu improves each visit”.
11. Khun Pakin Thai at The Salutation
Thai restaurant in Hammersmith
154 King Street - W6
2023 Review: A plug from Tom Parker Bowles in the Daily Mail did no harm at all to this Thai concession in an attractive old pub opposite the building site once known as ‘Hammersmith Town Hall’, where the cooking is a cut above that in a typical boozer. Top Tip – “if you get the chance, eat in the sun in the cute beer garden at the back: with some delish salt ’n’ pepper squid, life is good!”
