British, Modern Restaurants in Oxfordshire
. The Crooked Billet
British, Modern restaurant in Stoke Row
Newlands Ln - RG9
“Wonderful out-of-the-way” gastropub “down the end of a winding lane” and with “an amazing indoors with a dining room plastered with intriguing old photos”, which still “sets standards others struggle to meet” (listen up pop pickers, it’s owned by ex-Sweet and John Otway rock guitarist Paul Clerehugh, who set up here in 1989). “Never had a bad meal, course or service: it always delivers with taste, charm and pizzazz”. “A handwritten daily changing menu is always a joy to hold – other pretenders take note”.
. The Feathered Nest Inn
British, Modern restaurant in Nether Westcote
“Sublime food” in the “breathtaking surroundings” of an “exceptional inn in idyllic Cotswold countryside”. Polish-born Kuba Winkowski, the Craft Guild of Chefs 2018 ‘chef of the year’, wins universal praise for his “wonderful” repertoire of dishes, which includes sturgeon with caviar and fennel. It is, though, “eye-wateringly pricey” – “perhaps even more expensive than London, but worth it if you’re feeling flush”.
. The Nut Tree Inn
British, Modern restaurant in Murcott
Main Street - OX5
Local boy Michael North and his wife Imogen’s “cosy thatched pub” has made a real name for itself in the past dozen years for its “consistently great food for a reasonable price”. Still a real pub, serving the house Nut Tree ale, it serves everything from bar snacks to a “fantastic tasting menu paired with exciting wine choices” – while “a candlelit dinner by the open fire makes for romance”. Set in a small village, it’s hardly remote: the M40 – and Bicester shopping village – are just a few minutes away by car.
. White Hart
British, Modern restaurant in Fyfield
Main Road - OX13
This beautifully preserved 15th-century chantry is now a “superior gastro-pub”, serving “great food with local ingredients in a striking vaulted and panelled dining room”. Top Tip: “good-value set lunch”.
. The Crazy Bear
British, Modern restaurant in Stadhampton
Bear Ln - OX44
Funky decor is part of the offbeat package that originally won a name for this rural inn of over 25 years’ standing, which has both English and Thai restaurants under the same roof. Feedback was much more consistent this year regarding the cooking and also the “very friendly service”.
