British, Modern Restaurants in Oxfordshire
. The Crooked Billet
British, Modern restaurant in Stoke Row
Newlands Ln - RG9
“A divine rural location and consistently excellent, seasonal food” have drawn celebs and ordinary mortals alike to former punk bass guitarist (John Otway, Sweet) Paul Clerihugh’s one-of-a-kind gastropub for 30 years. “We’ve eaten here maybe 350 times over two decades and I recall only one poor meal – what a standard to have maintained!”. Prices can be “a bit too steep”, but are easily justified “on a cloudless summer’s evening, when the whole experience is magical”.
. The Nut Tree Inn
British, Modern restaurant in Murcott
Main Street - OX5
The “quality” of the food is exceptional (“soufflés are a must!”) at Mike & Imogen North’s “pleasant” and “understated”, fifteenth-century thatched pub in rural Oxfordshire (which is still a proper pub, despite its vaunted culinary reputation). “The accessible tasting menu sensibly draws from the main menu, offering a genuine tasting experience, with solidly conceived and well-balanced flavours in each dish”.
. Olivier at the Red Lion
British, Modern restaurant in Britwell Salome
“Rustic French food in the heart of the Chilterns” wins high ratings for this old village pub, “a lovely venue for lunch or dinner”. Chef-patron Olivier Bouet’s “reliably interesting cooking” has earned him quite a following in the area, after 12 years at The Sweet Olive (RIP) in nearby Aston Tirrold.
. The Crazy Bear
British, Modern restaurant in Stadhampton
Bear Ln - OX44
This lavish and wackily decorated converted country pub has been a feature of the area south of Oxford for over 25 years, and offers the option of either English or Thai dining (in separate dining rooms). Reports were quite limited in number this year, but praise “brilliant” results in either location, and also the bar and casual restaurant attached to their farm shop.
. The Mole Inn
British, Modern restaurant in Toot Baldon
“A lovely old characterful pub, tucked away in a tiny village near Oxford, with a pretty garden, plus a well-decorated interior preserving the original features”. “Loyal regulars come back again and again” as the “service is cheerful and efficient” and the food is “excellent”.
. The Vaults and Garden Cafe
British, Modern restaurant in Oxford
University Church of St Mary the Virgin, Radcliffe Sq - OX1
“A great Oxford institution” set in the “fifteenth-century vaults of the university church” – this ethical and organic café makes an “excellent stop-off point during a busy day in Oxford” – whether you’re shopping or studying texts next door in the Bodleian Library. “Superb coffee, decent food and a very civilised atmosphere, despite sometimes being crowded”.
. Luscombes at the Golden Ball
British, Modern restaurant in Henley-on-Thames
The Golden Ball, Lower Assendon - RG9
“Reliable”, “high-quality food” makes this former pub on the edge of Henley “a safe choice”. “The set lunch menu is particularly good value”.
