Mike (chef) & FOH Imogen North’s “stunning” historic venture is “always a treat”; “it’s a proper pub”, yes, but also doubles as an acclaimed restaurant, where Mike’s “simply sublime” food (seven-course tasting menus or à la carte at lunch, and tasting menus only by night) “cannot be recommended highly enough”.

“Lovely historic pub” that “never fails to delight” having “maintained an extremely high level of food and service” for more than 15 years under Mike & Imogen North, respectively chef and front of house. Even one diner who “doesn’t really like gastropubs as they seem to occupy a peculiar no-man’s-land that is neither one thing nor the other” says “this is an exception that delivers on all levels!”. Top Tip – “exceptional soufflés to die for!”.

“Mike and Imogen deliver the perfect product – Mike creating sublime food from the kitchen and Imogen creating a wonderful front-of-house welcome and service” at this thatched pub with a “lovely garden” to boost the already rural setting. “The quality of all the produce is superb and whether you are an omnivore or a vegetarian you are going to have a wonderful meal.”

The “quality” of the food is exceptional (“soufflés are a must!”) at Mike & Imogen North’s “pleasant” and “understated”, fifteenth-century thatched pub in rural Oxfordshire (which is still a proper pub, despite its vaunted culinary reputation). “The accessible tasting menu sensibly draws from the main menu, offering a genuine tasting experience, with solidly conceived and well-balanced flavours in each dish”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
