Featured Northleach Restaurants
1. Buckland Manor British, Modern restaurant in Buckland
“A first class experience from the warm welcome on arrival” – this Relais & Châteaux country house hotel is the epitome of a traditional Cotswolds destination and “very efficiently run, but in a very charming and stylish way”. William Guthrie and his team deliver “wonderful” updated cuisine, be it from the three-course menu for £70, or the hardly more expensive seven-course taster option for £80. This is also a splendid choice for afternoon tea: “a little piece of calm luxury”.
2. The Slaughters Manor House British, Modern restaurant in Lower Slaughter Copsehill Rd - GL54
Blessed with a picture-perfect village setting, this well-established hotel restaurant (nowadays under the Brownsword group) is a light, airy space whose fine dining food – afternoon tea to eight-course tasting menus – makes the most of local and foraged ingredients. It attracted limited feedback last year, but all positive.
3. Wheatsheaf Inn British, Modern restaurant in Northleach West End - GL54
This “country hotel with a warm and welcoming restaurant” is owned by Superdry fashion king Julian Dunkerton, who has smartened it up as part of his Lucky Onion Cotswold group.
4. Lords of the Manor British, Modern restaurant in Upper Slaughter Stow-on-the-Wold - GL54
“Never fails to impress with its superb cuisine and overall experience” say fans of this well-known, picture-book Cotswolds mansion (under the same owners as The Feathers in Woodstock), where reports last year were more consistently upbeat than in recent times. In April 2019 (rather late-in-the-day for survey feedback), the hotel changed its offer – simplifying the menu in the long-established main dining room – and launching a new dining space, ‘Atrium’, with a £95, eight-course tasting menu from chef Charles Smith. In the circumstances, it seems best to suspend a full rating till next year.
5. Atrium at Lords of the Manor British, Modern restaurant in Upper Slaughter Stow-on-the-Wold - GL54
Following a recent refurbishment, a second restaurant has opened at this plush Cotswolds manor house, with Charles Smith at the stoves. No more than 14 diners at any one time can enjoy an eight-course tasting menu for £95.
6. Barnsley House British, Modern restaurant in Barnsley
Owned by the same folk as The Village Pub, just across the road, this “very fancy” boutique hotel turns out “solid cooking with bold flavours”, and uses “a lot of produce straight from the garden”.
